The not-for-profit Monterey Bay Aquarium opened in 1984, and has earned a reputation for being among the world's finest. Located on Monterey's historic Cannery Row and featuring exhibitions that focus on Monterey Bay's diverse habitats and wildlife, it attracts between 1.7 and 2.4 million visitors each year.
The institution's mission is to inspire conservation of the oceans, both through exhibits and through conservation research and advocacy in such areas as sea otters, open-ocean fishes research, marine protected areas, fisheries health and others. More than 80,000 schoolchildren take advantage of the aquarium's free education programs and tours every year.
Position Overview:
The Research Coordinator will organize the research tasks conducted by the Research Team and independent contractors, maintain a research database, develop novel products drawing from Seafood Watch research, and support the Senior Science Manager and Research Team.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor the status of research contracts, communicating regularly with independent contractors and ensuring deliverables are submitted on time.
- Manage and maintain a MS Access database containing comprehensive information on all Seafood Watch Reports and a work plan developed by the Senior Science Manager.
- Provide timely summaries and data queries to support Research Team requests.
- Compile existing research information from Seafood Watch reports and other Research Team products to develop synthesis materials for major buyers, partner Seafood organizations, and outreach needs.
- Act as a primary liaison to provide timely responses to outside inquiries, include outreach needs and major buyer requests.
- Assist the Senior Science Manager in developing professional presentations and responding to outside inquiries as needed.
- Manage and maintain subscriptions and access to research journals to support the Research Team.
- Locate, compile, and disseminate relevant journal articles, government reports, etc. to support the Senior Science Manager and Research Team.
- Maintain an in-house library of fishery and aquaculture resources and manage journal subscriptions.
- Conduct administrative tasks to support the Senior Science Manager, including copying, printing, filing, completing forms, etc.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Marine Science, Science Communications, Marine Affairs, Business Administration, or other applicable field.
- Interdisciplinary academic training and/or experience is desired.
- Contract management experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills with respect to coordination.
- Excellent abilities in verbal and written communication.
- Demonstrated ability to manage MS Access database; proficiency with Internet, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and using library resources.
- Strong organization and administrative skills.
