KieranTimberlake a prominent internationally recognized Philadelphia (USA) architecture firm, is seeking a building performance specialist to join the KieranTimberlake Research Group, a trans-disciplinary research team interrogating and advancing building design practices through material, system, process, and environment driven questions.
KieranTimberlake is a leader in practice based architectural research and is ISO 9001-2008 certified. In addition to receiving the AIA National Firm Award for 2008, the partners were the inaugural Benjamin Latrobe Research Fellows awarded by the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. The partners directly engage in architecture education through teaching positions held at the University of Washington, Seattle and the University of Pennsylvania. They have published 3 books, Manual: the Architecture of KieranTimberlake (2002), refabricating ARCHITECTURE (2003), and Loblolly House: Elements of a New Architecture (2008).
Firm and research group members gave twenty-seven lectures or panel talks in 2008 at various events including the ACSA Cranbrook Conference, Carbon Neutral Design symposium, Greenbuild, and ACADIA. Additionally, the firm's building monitoring practices, associated with projects such as the Cellophane House, Loblolly House, and Yale Sculpture Building, have been the subject of several lectures and publications.
Position Overview:
The building performance specialist will integrate their expertise into the architectural design process with project support which includes numerically and visually modeling energy performance, day lighting, thermal transfer, and CFD modeling as it applies to natural ventilation. They will, likewise, analyze and validate data generated, communicate results to project teams, and prepare results for office-wide use.
Responsibilities:
The building performance specialist will, in collaboration with the research director, initiate research proposals in the role of principal investigator or staff researcher, and will work collaboratively on research group projects. They will be required to apply their expertise to the development of comprehensive building performance monitoring strategies and the interpretation of collected data.
They will also be required to assist in product development through the identification of performance requirements and prototype testing. The candidate should be comfortable seeking and engaging research peers from industry and academia, forming peer groups, preparing grant applications, and applying for funding through granting agencies.
The KieranTimberlake Research Group, as a highly collaborative entity, requires candidates to be functional in a social environment and have excellent oral and written communication skills. The building performance specialist will be required to communicate research findings to internal audiences, particularly designers, in a meaningful way. They are, likewise, expected to communicate research practices and findings through the preparation of research papers and presentations for academic and professional audiences.
Qualifications:
Master and Ph.D degree recipients in architectural engineering, building science or physics may apply. Candidates will be considered from academia and industry within the professions of architecture and engineering. Demonstrated building science, building physics, material, and building envelope knowledge is essential to this position. Equally essential is the demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
The position reports to the research director and partners.
Compensation: Salary commensurate with education level completed, professional experience, and demonstrated knowledge.
