chinadialogue is a nonprofit organization based in London, Beijing and San Francisco. "chinadialogue USA" is the U.S. subsidiary of chinadialogue and a project of the Tides Center, a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor. We publish a unique, fully bilingual Chinese-English website devoted to creating constructive dialogue with China on the environment and climate change. chinadialogue is well established as a trusted source, both inside China and internationally, for information and debate on critical environmental and climate issues.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a successor to our current US director, who has led chinadialogue's establishment on the West Coast for the past year and a half. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, committed to and knowledgeable about the issues, who will lead the next phase of chinadialogue's strategic development in North America. An ability to work independently, and within the framework of a small international team, is essential. Chinese language skills are preferred but not required. Experience starting and/or running a small non-profit are an advantage. Position will report to our Tides Center coordinator and London Editor/Founder, Isabel Hilton.

Responsibilities:

  • Fundraising - identify, cultivate and secure funding for U.S. office. This will involve managing grants from proposal to delivery in coordination with the Tides Center and chinadialogue's London office.
  • Market Research, Branding and Outreach - use existing site traffic reports and additional market research tools to build name recognition, readership and U.S. participation for the site. This will include maintaining online social networks, partnering with other U.S.-based organizations and media outlets, and building relationships for chinadialogue in the U.S., particularly in the areas of China-U.S. cooperation in energy, green tech and sustainable business.
  • Operations - establish and manage day-to-day operations of US office. This will include recruiting and managing interns and staff, drafting and managing budgets, adhering to all Tides Center project reporting requirements, working with external contractors (i.e. freelance writers), and managing US Advisory Board.
  • Content Development - contribute and commission original articles for the site. This will include writing stories, identifying and contacting potential contributors, assigning and scheduling articles, initial editing and coordination with editorial and web teams for publication, and contributing to ongoing editorial projects

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years non-profit and/or journalism experience
  • Proven ability to manage staff and lead projects
  • Enthusiasm for, and experience with, online media
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, Skype conferencing, social networking tools (i.e Facebook, Twitter), Google Docs
  • Previous experience with fundraising, grant writing and business development in the non profit sector
  • Familiarity with U.S. and global environmental issues as well as U.S.-China relations
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented

Compensation: This is currently a part-time position with 3 years of guaranteed competitive pay and the potential to grow into full-time with benefits.
