Mount Holyoke is a distinguished undergraduate liberal arts college for women with 2100 students and 210 faculty.  Approximately 17% of the students come from outside North America, and over 20% of domestic students are persons of color.  Half the faculty are women and one fourth are persons of color.  The College is located about 80 miles west of Boston in the Connecticut River valley, and is a member of the Five Colleges Consortium consisting of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts. 

Position Overview: 

Mount Holyoke College invites applications for the position of Leslie and Sarah Miller Director of the Center for the Environment.  Reporting to the Dean of Faculty, the Director will head the Center, charged with overseeing and expanding the College's curricular and programmatic initiatives in environmental education and campus sustainability.  The Director will play a leadership role in helping to build upon and highlight the College's long-standing commitment to environmental awareness and engagement.

Responsibilities: 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Chair an advisory board made up of faculty, staff, and students charged with facilitating and coordinating environmental programming and new initiatives  
  • Expand opportunities for environmental study, service, and internships 
  • Work to enhance the creative engagement of faculty, students, and staff in developing curricular and co-curricular environmental initiatives and programming  
  • Develop networks among Mount Holyoke alumnae for the expansion of the College's environmental visibility  
  • Help to generate grants and other support for environmental endeavors 
  • Establish and maintain a vital web presence  
  • Work with other administrative staff to develop and meet the College's environmental stewardship goals  
  • Collaborate with faculty and students in Environmental Studies (an interdisciplinary program offering a major and a minor in ES) on projects of mutual interest 
  • Explore and develop connections with Five College students, faculty, and staff interested in environmental education

Qualifications:

Ph.D. required. Scholar/teacher/administrator with strong expertise, interests, and experience in environmental education, preferably with responsibility for environmental program development and administration; ability to provide creative leadership in strengthening and energizing Mount Holyoke's environmental presence and programming on and off campus; proven abilities to work with diverse constituencies, including faculty, students, staff, community partners, and alumnae.

The Director shall be a faculty member appointed for a renewable 5-year term.  This position is open to both internal and external candidates. External candidates should have the academic credentials that would qualify them for either a tenured or an adjunct academic appointment in one of the departments or programs of the College, and will be expected to teach 1 course per semester.
