Description

The National Trust for Historic Preservation provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to save America's diverse historic places and revitalize our communities.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to saving historic places and revitalizing America's communities. Recipient of the National Humanities Medal, the Trust was founded in 1949 and provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to protect the irreplaceable places that tell America's story. Staff at the Washington, DC, headquarters, six regional offices and 29 historic sites work with the Trust's 270,000 members and thousands of preservation groups in all 50 states.

The need for the National Trust for Historic Preservation has increased since its founding in 1949. When historic buildings and neighborhoods are torn down or allowed to deteriorate, a part of our past disappears forever. When that happens, we lose history that helps us know who we are, and we lose opportunities to live and work in the kinds of interesting and attractive surroundings that older buildings can provide.

Position Overview:

The Director of the Preservation Green Lab will be responsible managing the Preservation Green Lab's work in a satellite office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation located in Seattle, Washington.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include developing policy with partner cities to encourage rehabilitation and energy retrofits of older and historic buildings and reinvestment in existing communities.

Initial partner cities include Seattle, San Francisco and Dubuque. The Director would be responsible for seeking new opportunities to collaborate with additional cities, state governments, academic institutions and other organizations. Management responsibilities will include oversight of other positions in the Seattle office, including, but not limited to, a preservation architect.

The Preservation Green Lab's work will be closely coordinated with the Nationat Trust's Center for State and Local Policy, the Vice President of Public Policy in Washington DC and the Western Regional Office located in San Francisco. The Director will work with selected cities, states, and preservation partners to develop and assist with the implementation of policy that promotes the integration of preservation and sustainable development policy into policy documents, including but not limited to: building, energy, and zoning codes; comprehensive plans; and climate action or sustainability plans. The Director will also work with selected cities and partners to develop energy retrofit projects in historic buildings as demonstration projects.

Qualifications:

  • A Masters Degree in urban planning, preservation planning or related field is required.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of state and local planning processes is a priority, as is knowledge of preservation practices, building and energy codes, green building practices and energy policy.
