The U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington, DC-based national nonprofit organization of over 17,000 corporate and organizational members from every sector of the building industry united to transform the building marketplace to sustainability, is currently seeking an experienced professional to play an essential role working with USGBC and media relations in the communications department.

Position Overview:

The Communications Coordinator plays a key role in the fast-paced communications department. Working closely with the Communication Manager, the Communications Coordinator will assist with media follow-up and maintaining media relationships; will strategically use multiple and aligned communications vehicles to convey important news and information about USGBC to key audiences and stakeholders, all while maintaining a consistent message.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with incoming media inquiries
    • Maintaining reporter relationships; coordinating press interviews with sensitivity to various issues and spokespeople
  • Drafting and distributing USGBC media communications
    • Emails, press releases, press kit (online and hardcopy)
    • Fact checking, data gathering, updating and maintaining all stats to support media relations
  • Maintaining databases (Media contacts, PR contacts, editorial calendars, Greenbuild media databases, press conference and media events, Greenbuild media registration)
  • Developing, writing, and editing multiple newsletters, email blasts and email marketing campaigns, including USGBC in the News
  • Maintaining consistency with the USGBC message through all our communications pieces and collateral
  • Developing and implementing specific communications plans as they relate to USGBC's internal and external audiences
  • Writing and editing USGBC articles for publication in trade and mainstream press
  • Web Site management
    • Helping maintain press section of USGBC.org
    • Posting news and information to USGBC Web site
    • Editing content of USGBC Web site

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of communications/public relations experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications or Business (Marketing) or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Web site experience a plus
  • Team player with outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communications skills (both verbal and written)
  • Very strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to multi-task and problem solve diverse issues
  • Commitment to USGBC mission
