Position Overview:
Under minimal supervision, the Sustainability Director will serve as the primary campus resource on Sustainability issues, assisting in curriculum development, instruction, academic advising, and staff training on the subject.
Responsibilities:
- Develops baseline assessments of campus sustainability policies, practices, curriculum and research, and provides recommendations for policy and program improvements. Provides support for strategic initiatives endorsed by senior faculty and administrators, staff, and students. Builds involvement and support for sustainability projects across the University community. Develops new tools, incentives, and instructional opportunities that facilitate implementation of desired changes. Serves on Sustainability Advisory Committee
- Advises Provost, Deans and Department Chairs in opportunities to integrate sustainability into course curriculums and advance sustainability research.
- Develops a communications and outreach program and serves as the University's primary public relations contact regarding sustainability initiatives. Supervises management of the sustainability website including, creation of materials, and periodical updates. Manages publication of an annual campus sustainability report.
- Participates in planning and design of new capital projects. Supports Facilities Planning Project Managers by contributing expertise on strategies and technologies that reduce life cycle building costs, improves occupant comfort and productivity, and protects natural systems.
- Implements a campus energy conservation policy and program. Develops strategy to identify and prioritize opportunities to reduce campus energy consumption and utility costs. Evaluates these opportunities for technical feasibility, cost effectiveness, and acceptability by the WFU community.
- Instructs a range of campus constituencies, including administrators, staff, faculty, and students on sustainability principles, management tools, best practices, and research and funding opportunities. Coordinates workshops, conferences, exhibits, events, and meetings on a wide range of sustainability topics.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Functions:
- Is considered an essential employee as designated in the Facilities Management Severe Weather Policy.
- Is subject to recall after hours in the event of campus emergencies, disasters or other special needs as directed by management.
- Reports all matters of safety to the appropriate Assistant Superintendent and to the Safety Director if necessary.
- Follows all University and departmental policies and procedures.
- Performs other related duties as required by management.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in resource economics, public policy, environmental studies, appropriate technology, architecture, planning, or related discipline plus 6 years experience in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge and experience of sustainability theory and implementation; including sustainable business practices.
- Ability to create and implement new programs.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.
- Experience in public relations, event planning, and fundraising.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, the Internet and E-mail).
- General knowledge of campus environment.
- Ability to implement policy and procedural guidelines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including customer service skills
- Valid driver license with a good driving record; must be insurable.
