Baltimore City is building a coalition of public-private, community based and philanthropic partners to collectively promote a "green collar jobs" workforce plan. With the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and our local Workforce Investment Board, Baltimore is moving aggressively to target sustainability as a growth employment sector.
Position Overview:
The City of Baltimore has recently created an Environmental Sub-Cabinet that develops and coordinates City policies and programs to improve the environmental performance of City operations within a sustainable framework. As staff to this body, the Baltimore Office of Sustainability is developing a sustainable purchasing program to be integrated throughout City operations.
With an annual budget of over $1.5 billion and nearly 11,000 employees, the City of Baltimore has a tremendous opportunity to make improve supply chain sustainability while serving as an example to the community. The Sustainable Purchasing Intern will help formulate and implement the sustainable purchasing program.
Responsibilities:
- Research sustainable purchasing policies from other governments and large organizations
- Work with purchasing staff to develop understanding of current City purchasing processes and policies
- Analyze best practices
- Collect and organize resources for sustainable vendors and products
- Draft policy proposals
- Present findings and recommendations to various levels of City staff
Qualifications:
- Commitment of at least 15/hours a week
- Working knowledge of sustainable purchasing concepts
- Adept researcher
- Effective communicator with ability to convey the benefits of sustainable purchasing
- Well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player
- Ability to creatively problem solve
- Desire to make Baltimore a national leader in sustainability
