Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), a non-profit business association that works with business and stakeholders to create a more just and sustainable world, is seeking a Research Associate, Human Rights to join its CSR Strategy team in its New York office.

Position Overview:

The Associate will report to the Director of Research, and will be responsible for conducting research, analysis and writing focused on human rights. This may include participating in business advisory consulting and training work as required.

The Associate will also support the Director in developing research proposals and workplans, and will support the planning and facilitation of relevant internal and external meetings and small convenings.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct primary and secondary research and analysis on human rights, and emerging issues and trends in CSR utilizing a wide range of sources and research methods.
  • Write business critical research reports, training materials and other communication to help advance the understanding of human rights issues and emerging trends in the business community.
  • Assist in the development of proposals, work plans, and budgets for the delivery of research, grants, project deliverables and other duties as needed.
  • Support the Director of Research in representing BSR in relevant global forums on human rights as needed.
  • Contribute to the content and design of internal meetings, trainings and workshops, and ensure the accuracy of all materials.
  • Build and maintain relationships with staff at BSR member companies and potential member companies, NGOs, government agencies, and other stakeholders and participate actively in staff training and functions.
  • Participate in human rights focused business consulting projects as needed and provide assistance on special projects and assignments as requested to help BSR accomplish its mission and goals.
  • Other duties as required and assigned by the Director.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience required; Master's degree in social sciences strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years relevant work experience, including demonstrated knowledge of human rights, economic development or related issues.
  • Exceptional research and writing skills, and ability to do some preliminary analysis on CSR research.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to meet stringent deadlines, communicate progress on projects or event planning, and work with managers to coordinate multiple projects concurrently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, for working with both internal and external clients.
  • Language skills: in addition to English, fluency in a second language is preferred, ideally French, Mandarin or Spanish.
  • Capacity to work and thrive in a growing, fast-paced, entrepreneurial organization with a collaborative environment and globally based teams.
  • Willingness to undertake business travel up to 20% time.

Compensation: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with skill, knowledge and experience level and the constraints of a non-profit business organization.
