Position Overview:
TransAlta Wind is currently seeking a Business Development Manager to lead the expansion of our wind division from the initial conceptual stages through to project approval. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in growing a business in a commercially competitive environment. You will have strong commercial skills and thrive on the challenges and opportunities of working in a growing and dynamic industry. A key skill is to be able to communicate the value of opportunities to allow them to be compared to other projects, both within the team and to TransAlta Executives.
You will want to utilize your skills in successfully negotiating agreements and are ready to put your commercial, technological and people skills to work in the field of renewable energy. Proven track record of experience working with and managing a team of people ideally in a consultancy, planning or renewables career or similar. Able to work to time and budget, prepare project plans and reports at board level and other Executives. Organized, thorough and diligent manager with excellent inter-personal and communication skills.
Reporting to the Managing Director of the Wind Asset Team, the successful applicant will be responsible for developing and delivering wind projects that contribute to our portfolio. Using proven business skills the successful applicant will develop and present strategies and business cases to senior management and customers. Success will be measured on the quality of opportunities identified and the successful closing of projects that meet corporate goals and objectives. The role will be based at TransAlta's head office in Calgary, Alberta.
Responsibilities:
- Originate project opportunities and market assessments for wind opportunities in Canada and the United States.
- Assist in assessment of wind assets as part of portfolio acquisitions.
- Coordinate and manage the project approval process by leading cross-functional teams to prepare, evaluate, and approve projects including RFP processes and directly negotiated opportunities.
- Act as the main customer and partner point of contact for development project.
- Review and assess financial and business information, analyze project risks and opportunities, and make recommendations.
- Lead the preparation and presentation of business case to senior management and customers.
- Negotiate and close agreements and contracts that meet TransAlta's commercial, legal, and operational interests and criteria.
- Lead the coordination of the proposal development process.
- Lead the scheduling and planning of the proposal process.
- Manage the economic modeling process.
- Co-ordinate the final review of proposal and contracts, including required documentation before signing and delivery to client.
- Participate in contract negotiations and arrange clarification of technical aspects.
- Lead a culture of continuous improvement through the analysis of pre-sales activities by won and lost orders and drawing conclusions for sales strategy.
- Significant travel may be required as various stages of project development.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in either Engineering, Business or Finance.
- Minimum five years experience in the power industry and/or business development.
- Strong analytical, modeling and financial skills combined with good business judgment.
- Experience with capital project over $50 million.
- Superior communication skills. Ability to develop effective working relationships both internally and externally.
- Capable of working with minimum direction. Ability to establish tasks and objectives necessary to meet broader goals.
- Strong leadership and influencing skills.
- Knowledge of renewables, the power industry and related market structures.
