The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a global non-profit environmental organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists. Our staff of over 350 includes lawyers, scientists, economists, and policy analysts who work to protect the environment and public health through advocacy and education.
The NRDC Center for Market Innovation offers a unique opportunity to lead change at the intersection between markets and public policy.
Position Summary:
NRDC is seeking a Senior Fellow for its newly created Center for Market Innovation (CMI). The CMI combines business and policy leadership to accelerate deployment of clean technologies and practices.
This is a two-year full-time position starting in early 2008. The Senior Fellow will play a central role in driving the Center's mission by building on existing relationships and initiatives to ensure capital markets advance global warming solutions.
The successful candidate will:
* Design and advocate for market-based solutions that encourage rapid scale up of energy efficiency and rapid deployment of low-carbon energy supply;
* Manage outreach and negotiations with the financial sector on a range of climate and energy issues, e.g. understanding the current risk/reward positioning of key financial intermediaries and encouraging redirection of capital towards clean solutions by communicating the implications of impending climate regulations;
* Prepare NRDC to influence future CO2 related deal negotiations per NRDC's role in scaling back coal-fired power plant investment as part of the KKR/TPG buyout of TXU; * Collaborate with NRDC's Energy and Climate programs to assess the financial implications of key climate change policy design elements and help to refine NRDC's policy agenda accordingly.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the personal and professional skills to advance the Center's objectives, including:
* Minimum of three years of private sector experience, especially investment banking, real estate finance, top-tier management consulting, and/or project finance;
* MBA or other degree or experience providing strong finance and economics training
* Demonstrated experience in strategic thinking and implementation of collaborative projects.
* Superior communication skills, including the ability to engage effectively with a broad range of stakeholders;
* Familiarity with energy systems and climate change policy preferred.
