Description

The Center for Regional Sustainability of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History seeks a full-time coordinator to help put Northeast Ohio on the path toward carbon neutrality. This person will serve as the climate expert within the Museum and will be responsible for strategic planning and public outreach to reduce the region's carbon footprint. The coordinator will report to the director of the Museum's Center for Regional Sustainability.

Duties 

This is a multifaceted job with duties including but not limited to: 

Research - Define the greenhouse gas reductions required for carbon neutrality in Northeast Ohio and describe the transition paths for key sectors (such as energy, transportation, buildings, etc.). 

Clearinghouse - Make The Cleveland Museum of Natural History a clearinghouse of science-based information on climate change, a hub of activity, and a place where diverse interests can come together in dialogue. 

Public Education - Increase public awareness of climate change, the need for (and benefits of) immediate action, and how to take action. This position will be the resource person at the Museum who will make presentations and answer questions from the public. 

Outreach - Develop partnerships and obtain commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by large institutions (such as businesses, universities, churches, and governments) as a way of putting Northeast Ohio on the path to climate stabilization. Become acquainted and interface with the environmental organizations in Ohio and nationally which are effectively involved on the issue of climate change. 

Policy Change - Identify policy changes and incentives needed to support local actions that will achieve climate neutrality. Work with partners to achieve these policy changes and incentives at the local, state and federal levels. 

Fundraising - Assist Museum staff in raising additional funds for the project. 

Qualifications 

  • Personal commitment to reducing the region's carbon footprint. 
  • Knowledge of the science of global warming and ability to translate complex scientific information into simple language. 
  • Entrepreneurial, action-oriented person who can create a new project and get things done in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to work independently and think strategically. 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills; persuasive presenter. 
  • Ability to work with a diversity of people. 
  • Ability to travel to meetings throughout Northeast Ohio. 
  • Bachelor's degree required (advanced degree preferred). 
  • Basic computer skills and experience with standard office applications required.
