Homewaters Project is an educational nonprofit organization located in Seattle, Washington.  Our mission is to create an engaged and informed citizenry by connecting people to nature and each other in the context of their home communities. Our vision is that through education, people are prepared and inspired to create healthy communities, where human activities fit within the limits of natural ecosystems. 

Homewaters Project serves the students of the Seattle area, their teachers, and citizens with hands-on, inquiry-based explorations of watershed and community dynamics, several of which link directly to existing school district science curricula. Housed at North Seattle Community College, the small staff and board of Homewaters focus on experiential, interactive learning grounded in the home place of each student we serve.  

Position Overview:

We are hiring an Education Specialist (75% time). This position has excellent benefits and the potential to grow to full-time.

Description:

The Education Specialist will support and assist education staff with existing programs so that new programs can be expanded. The position will assist with coordination and delivery of 5th grade "Land and Water" field program and other elementary watershed ecology programs while assisting with community center, middle and high school community mapping programs.

This position reports to the Homewaters Executive Director.

Essential Functions:

  • Assume primary responsibility for coordination and delivery of Homewaters Project's original curricula, in particular the 5th grade "Land and Water" and "Tiny Neighbors" field investigations, along with three community mapping programs for K-5, 8th, and 10th grade audiences. 
  • Provide general support as needed to other education programs and assist with school related outreach activities such as K-12 teacher trainings and field/classroom teaching. 
  • Assist with outreach and educational events including educational and community events and with other school related outreach activities, such as K-12 teacher trainings and field/classroom teaching. 
  • Participate in other tasks as needed to ensure continuity, staff chemistry and effective functioning of small non-profit organization.

Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Education, or a related field AND five (5) years experience with environmental education, community organizing, or education. 
  • Verifiable experience with Microsoft Office and knowledge of Seattle watersheds, particularly Thornton Creek. 
  • Demonstrated ability to handle deadlines; to feel comfortable leading and speaking in front of large groups of people; and to confidently assist in classrooms and in the field; and to prioritize work effectively and efficiently. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency of excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated; to work independently; to be detail oriented; to coordinate many different tasks; and to work well with diverse groups of people. 
  • A demonstrated commitment to the mission of Homewaters Project.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Education.
