Project Location: Salem, OR Position Summary: The Natural Resource Science Education Coordinator will:
1. Conduct outreach to public and private high and middle, urban and rural schools in the region to recruit students for the Youth Enviro Squad (YES) activities that occur throughout the year and encourage applications for the W3 (Wildlife, Watersheds and What-Not) class.
2. Coordinate these and other after-school natural resource activities in conjunction with the Supervisor. Direct service-learning instruction as appropriate.
3. Develop, coordinate and monitor YES restoration & work sites with OSU Extension partners.
4. Participate in meetings and help support activities for the US Partnership for the Decade of Sustainability Youth Action Council. Develop and help support the Northwest Youth Action Council activity.
5. Coordinate Youth Leadership Team activities, college intern program participation, MANRS OSU Chapter and teacher program advisor input.
General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to): 1. Conduct outreach to teachers/students/schools.
2. Coordinate the after-school natural resource activities.
3. Schedule guest-speakers/instructors and field trips.
4. Prepare student learning tools and presenter feedback forms; track student attendance, participation, evaluation, and grading.
5. Develop, coordinate and monitor YES restoration & work sites.
6. Assist with project development for the W3 delegation to Caretakers of the Environment International Conference - Denmark or other designated site.
7. Support activities for the US Partnership for the Decade of Sustainability Youth Council.
8. Develop and help support the Northwest Youth Action Council activity.
9. Lead and mentor the Youth Leadership Team.
10. Complete and submit all necessary NWSA/AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
11. Attend and complete all NWSA/AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days.
12. Wear an NWSA uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.
Position Requirements:
1. Self-directed; good organizational skills.
2. Basic computer skills in Word, Excel, email and web browsing.
3. Good, concise writing skills.
4. Public speaking skills.
5. Enthusiastic about environmental stewardship.
6. Experience working with teens/youth.
7. Ability to drive a large vehicle such as a 12 passenger van (training provided).
8. Personal vehicle is occasionally used for service activities and mileage reimbursement is approved.
9. Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record and ability to provide documentation.
10. Ability to successfully pass a drug test (random or otherwise) conducted by project sponsor.
11. 18 years of age or older, at beginning of service term.
12. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
13. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.
14. Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
15. Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check provided through NWSA and/or Project Sponsor Agency.
16. Regular and reliable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. An independent, motivated, creative, resourceful individual who enjoys working with diverse groups.
2. Desire and ability to recruit and manage volunteers.
3. Interest or experience in natural resources and/or biology.
4. Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
5. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and/or a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.
6. A cooperative manner and the ability to work as part of a team.
7. A commitment to the goals of OSU Extension Service.
Member Benefits Include:
1. A taxable, monthly living allowance (before taxes, approximately $1009).
2. Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members/leaders receive an education award of $4,725. The education award can be used to repay qualified student loans, for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational or trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used.
3. Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable).
4. Basic medical insurance (covers members only, not dependents; vision and dental not included).
5. Child care allowance for those who qualify.
6. We can assist the member in finding low cost housing.
Transportation Information:
1. Organizational vehicle is available for service activities.
