Description
SeaWeb, a communications-based nonprofit organization that uses social marketing techniques to advance ocean conservation, seeks a qualified candidate to manage conservation outreach within its Seafood Choices Alliance program. By raising public awareness, advancing science-based solutions and mobilizing decision-makers around ocean conservation, SeaWeb is leading voices for a healthy ocean.
Seafood Choices Alliance is a global nonprofit trade association that works with the seafood industry to expand seafood choices while ensuring a healthy ocean. The Alliance serves as a bridge between the seafood industry and the conservation community to transform the seafood marketplace into a more environmentally sustainable one.
Sustainable seafood-themed retailer commitments and NGO corporate partnerships have signaled a growing crescendo in the marketplace in support of environmentally preferable fisheries. Non-profit marine conservation groups are playing a pivotal role in creating market pressure for sustainably-caught seafood and advising major industry buyers on how to move their product lines toward more environmentally preferable choices. There is even greater potential to transform the seafood industry towards sustainability if the marine conservation community can fully leverage its resources and expand its work with exceptional levels of coordination.
Job Description:
The candidate will work with the Seafood Choice Alliance Director and team on its sustainable seafood initiatives directed at key audiences within the seafood industry, including fishermen and fish farmers, wholesalers, suppliers, retailers and chefs. A key role of this position will be to link leaders in the seafood industry with the major players in the marine conservation community, and to assist with communication and coordination within the marine conservation community on industry-related activities.
This position will provide exposure to the full suite of sustainable seafood issues and Alliance members and will provide a large degree of flexibility and ownership of projects and events.
The successful candidate must be a strategic, flexible and results-oriented individual with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge of market-based approaches to solving environmental challenges is critical. Specific experience in the seafood industry is not required, although familiarity with the nonprofit sector, supply chain dynamics, corporate social responsibility and industry best practices is preferred.
This is a full-time one-year position with possibility of renewal.
Primary objectives and responsibilities will include:
- Providing strategic advice to Alliance members in the development of activities to advance the market for sustainable seafood.
- Working with the marine conservation community to facilitate market-based strategies of non profit working groups addressing challenging wild fisheries and aquaculture issues, and helping to identify potential conflicts and solutions.
- Organizing and implementing strategic gatherings that facilitate greater inter-organizational coordination among marine conservation groups.
The successful candidate will bring the motivation, energy and focus necessary to advance the Alliance's objectives, and combine exceptional communication skills with well-honed strategic instincts in order to function effectively within corporate and non-governmental settings. The candidate must exhibit excellent strategic abilities, with the capacity to articulate programmatic needs and translate them into effective initiatives.
Additional qualifications include:
- Minimum of a Master's degree in fisheries or a related marine conservation field, resource economics, marine policy or related areas.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and persuasively, be an effective public speaker and have the ability to engage a broad array of individuals at all levels.
- Strong coordination and organizational skills, the ability to work well with a diverse group of people and skill in communicating complex issues both verbally and in written form.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and enjoy travel.
- At least 5 years professional experience, with at least 2 years experience working with non-profit conservation groups. Experience working in non-profit coalitions a plus.
Compensation:
Competitive salary commensurate with experience, in addition to a generous benefits package.
