Description
The Bonneville Environmental Foundation is an innovative, entrepreneurial non-profit foundation dedicated to addressing the threat of climate change by supporting a clean and carbon-free energy future, and by restoring the resilience of our streams and rivers to cope with the impacts of human consumption and climate change.
The Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) was founded in 1998 to support watershed restoration programs and develop new sources of renewable energy. Funding for these efforts has been provided in a way that would be called unusual for most foundations.
BEF, a non-profit organization, markets green power products to public utilities, businesses, government agencies and individuals. What began as a partnership with the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) has expanded to include other suppliers and markets. The foundation is largely self-funded through its revenue-generating programs, including the sale of carbon offsets in the form renewable energy certificates (called Green Tags) from new renewable energy projects, and the delivery of services through its renewable energy project management group. In its most recent fiscal year, the foundation generated about $3.5 million in revenues from these programs, and used the net proceeds to fund the balance of its initiatives.
Renewable Energy Program: BEF strives to promote innovation in project finance and design, and to increase the visibility of clean, renewable, distributed energy generation technologies through education and community outreach. BEF's reach is national and assistance may take the form of a grant, investing in an equity position, or providing project management.
Watershed Program: The Bonneville Environmental Foundation is dedicated to restoring watershed ecosystems throughout the Pacific Northwest. Since 1999, BEF has committed over $1.6 million to support community-based initiatives that improve water quality, restore habitat, and bolster native salmon and trout populations. By applying rigorous project standards and supporting only long-term and science-based restoration initiatives, BEF invests its resources in projects with the greatest potential to produce enduring watershed gains.
Key Opportunities and Challenges: BEF is not just an energetic, growing, diversifying innovative (non-profit) business with principles, and not simply a mission-driven foundation with a passing, once-a-year concern for balancing its books. BEF is an organization that aspires to fundamentally shift the sources of electricity in our supply and help solve our global warming challenge.
Example: BEF devises a product - Green Tags - to create market access to green power for customers of utilities not offering this option. The green tag product offers renewable project developers more direct access to customers with an appetite for the product; customers have more direct access to renewable energy products expanding customer's choices; and transaction costs are driven down. Other marketers see an opportunity and enter the market, competing with BEF but also growing that market and giving it credibility.
BEF must always be looking for new opportunities. Renewable energy markets are highly volatile, growing and changing direction at a breathtaking pace. Federal and State regulations can shift the terms of market participation overnight. The revenue from BEF products provides the resources to fund many of its activities, including its watershed programs. In a changing market, the organization must always be looking for new, sustainable revenue sources.
