The In-School Education Program Assistants will support Boston teachers and their students in conducting field studies, gathering data on urban biodiversity and water quality, and facilitating the transfer of this information to local community groups, schools, and government agencies.
The VISTA members will work with teachers to develop education materials for use by students of many different abilities. Also, each VISTA will have the opportunity to take the lead on at least one organizational capacity-building project. Their energy, knowledge and enthusiasm will be focused on enhancing science education in inner city schools, thereby promoting the stewardship of urban ecosystems through discovery, learning and student empowerment.
Duties and Responsibilities
The specific tasks will include:
1. Helping 4-6 Boston-area science teachers achieve the goals delineated in UEI's Teacher Phasing plan;
2. Creating activities that help teachers integrate our field ecology curriculum into their course plans;
3. Helping teachers develop and execute a long-term field ecology research project at their school site or field site;
4. Developing activities that integrate data management into the classroom through data observation, collection, field protocols and the website;
5. Coordinating at least one of the following organizational capacity-building projects: database management, program evaluation (with an opportunity to publish), web design (using the web to improve teacher professional development), youth development (helping to build a more robust school-career pathway);
6. Coordinating transportation, equipment orders, teacher training workshops and student conferences;
7. Performing general office tasks including communicating with teachers and various agencies through e-mail, phone and fax, as well as inputting data on our intra-net and website;
8. Regularly attending community meetings, staff meetings and professional development trainings;
9. Participating in program-specific and organization-wide strategic planning processes.
Skills and Qualifications
We are looking for hard-working, dedicated self-starters who desire a rewarding and challenging experience in urban environmental education. Only applicants dedicated to a year of public service through AmeriCorps*VISTA, the domestic Peace Corps, should apply. You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States to apply.
Required: Experience in teaching and/or theories of education; excellent writing and communication skills; attention to detail; ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize; strong organizational skills; commitment to the empowerment of underserved students and communities; interest in leadership development; ability to work with diverse groups of people; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to work in fast paced, but friendly environment; basic Microsoft Office computer skills. A positive attitude and sense of humor are a must.
Desired: bilingual (especially Chinese, French Cape-Verdean, Spanish, or Portuguese), community organizing or community development experience, science background, familiarity with Boston's communities and school systems.
The Out-of-School Time (OST) Education Program Assistants will work with educators in Boston out-of-school time programs to: develop and implement workshops for educators; work with educators to implement UEI field studies in their out-of-school time programs; assist with the Greentimes "By Kids, For Kids" science writing program and LEAH (Leaders in Education, Action and Hope) Mentoring Program; and help plan for any expansions of the UEI OST curriculum. Also, each VISTA will have the opportunity to take the lead on at least one organizational capacity-building project.

5. Coordinate transportation, equipment orders and training workshops and conferences;
6. General office tasks including communicating with teachers and various agencies through e-mail, phone and fax, as well as inputting data on the computer and website and filing;
7. Regularly attend community meetings, staff meetings and professional development trainings;
8. Participating in program-specific and organization-wide strategic planning processes. .

START DATE: July 2nd. Positions are full time and one year long with the possibility of re-enrollment for a second year.
COMPENSATION: AmeriCorps*VISTA will provide a living allowance of about $410 (after taxes) paid once every two weeks. For all members that complete a year of service, they may choose either a $4725 education award or $1200 stipend.
