Description
The Student Conservation Association (SCA), the nations leading provider of conservation internships for young people in the United States is seeking two experienced, quality-oriented outdoor leaders to supervise a ten person intern crew. The crew will be responsible for assisting in completion of construction and restoration projects throughout Mount Rainier National Park.
Last fall the park's facilities and forests were heavily damaged as a result of torrential rains and flooding. Hundreds of roads, buildings, woodlands, trails and campgrounds were entirely washed away. Working in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), SCA has been tasked with leading all volunteer recovery efforts throughout the park. As part of this effort, crew leaders will lead an intern team responsible for helping train, coordinate, and lead volunteer groups. These volunteer teams will use traditional trail skills, restoration techniques, and hard labor, to complete an array of projects aimed at rebuilding, and restoring the park. This intern team will be responsible for assisting with base camp operations, risk management, and field logistics.
Typical restoration projects may include heavy debris removal, campground restoration, erosion control, trail and bridge rebuilds and reroutes.
SCA Crew Leaders are responsible for coordinating with the Mount Rainier Recovery Corps (MRRC) Staff on the design, implementation and evaluation of trail projects as well as safely supervising a crew in all aspects of their work. This is a full-time, temporary, position. Period of Employment: April 2, 2007 - September 28, 2007 (26 weeks)
Responsibilities:
* Coordinate with MRRC Staff to identify trail projects and help plan for their implementation.
* Assist in all aspects of crew member orientation and training.
* Directly supervise crew members in a variety of restoration projects.
* Have a working knowledge and comply with all SCA/NPS policies and procedures
* Manage all logistics for each assigned volunteer restoration crew including transportation throughout the park, housing, meals, equipment and supplies.
* Significant amounts of travel throughout the park.
* Assist the SCA MRRC Staff with program management including but not limited to budget management and reconciliation.
* Manage all aspects of SCA Safety and Risk Management protocols.
* Facilitate building an environment that promotes teamwork between SCA staff, the NPS, and volunteer organizations.
* Represent SCA in a positive and professional manner.
* Coordinate with and report to MRRC Director to ensure full compliance with program standards.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* 21 years of age or older.
* Previous trail construction/restoration experience and the knowledge and ability to perform trail construction/restoration work in a variety of ecosystems - required
* Previous chainsaw experience preferred
* 2-4 years prior experience in supervising young adults in an outdoor, wilderness setting.
* Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification
* Excellent communication and leadership skills, strong work ethic are required.
* Self starter ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Ability to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds and be able to work in outdoor environment exposed to the elements including camping and hiking for extended periods of time.
* Have a valid driver's license, good driving record and be approved to drive through SCA's driving policies.
* Have working knowledge of safely operating power and hand-tools.
Compensation
Starting salary: $500/week for 26 -week period (2-week training, 10 weeks preparation, 12-week crew, 2 week wrap up). Primitive housing (wall tent, bunkhouse, etc) and meals are provided. A vehicle will be provided to transport the crew for work purposes.
