2007 Spring/Summer Internship

Strawberry Hill Nature Center and Preserve is offering a full-time internship for the spring and summer of 2007 (early April - mid August). Interns will gain valuable experience in environmental education, including curriculum development, teaching outdoors, and working with children ages 4-15. Interns will also work with the Preserve Manager to assist with our natural resource management projects. 

Strawberry Hill is a non-profit preserve and nature center located on 609 acres in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, 8 miles southwest of Gettysburg. In addition to our year-round schedule of educational programs, Strawberry Hill offers visitors more than 10 miles of walking trails that explore a variety of habitats from streams and wetlands to woods and rock outcrops. 

Responsibilities: 

* Teach students of all ages in both the field and classroom. Help manage our summer Nature Camps for children, including development of curriculum and activities.
* Maintain nature center, including exhibits, displays, and live animals (including snakes). Help develop new exhibits and displays, as needed. 
* Greet visitors to the nature center and preserve. Represent the center at off-site events. 
* Perform basic office duties, such as tracking programs statistics, scheduling programs, developing and copying materials.
* Assist with natural resource management projects and basic trail maintenance. 

Qualifications: 

* Strong communication skills. 
* Must be able to speak effectively before groups, especially children, and interact constructively and well with others.
* Previous experience working with children and teaching is a plus. 
* Enthusiasm for and a basic knowledge of the natural world are important.
* Ability to walk/hike the main teaching trails on the preserve. 
* Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in a wide range of weather conditions. * Enthusiastic and reliable self-starter who enjoys working in a small organization.
* Intern must have own car since Center is located 3 miles from town. 

Benefits: $150/week stipend and housing (a 2-bedroom cabin with living area, bathroom, kitchen, front porch and parking located in the preserve, steps away from trails; 5-minute walk to Center).
