Description

Forest Trends is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Program Manager for the Business and Biodiversity Offsets Program (BBOP). Reporting to the Director of BBOP, the Program Manager will run BBOP's day-to-day activities, working with the BBOP partners, which include multinational companies, nongovernmental organizations, national governments and financial institutions.

Preferably based in Washington, DC, the role involves frequent international travel. The Program Manager will also liaise with Forest Trends' other programs, e.g. on ecosystem services markets. The position is an opportunity to contribute to a pioneering and high-visibility program that combines business and conservation, to shape globally recognized best practice, and achieve significant results.

BBOP is a partnership of companies, government agencies, scientists, NGOs and financial institutions. Forest Trends and Conservation International provide its Secretariat. Biodiversity offsets are conservation actions intended to compensate for the residual, unavoidable harm to biodiversity caused by major development projects, to ensure at least no net loss of biodiversity and, where possible, net gain.

BBOP aims to demonstrate conservation and livelihood outcomes in a portfolio of biodiversity offset pilot projects in the context of the development of new mines, oil and gas, real estate and other infrastructure projects worldwide. We are also developing, testing and disseminating a toolkit of best practice on biodiversity offsets, and contributing to government and corporate policy developments on biodiversity offsets, so they meet conservation and business objectives. (See www.forest-trends.org/biodiversityoffsetprogram.)

The BBOP Program Manager will:

* Develop the BBOP work program and oversee its activities, coordinating the Secretariat's work and liaison with the BBOP International Advisory Committee; plan and manage the bi-annual international Program Meetings; negotiate, oversee and track consultancy agreements; and manage outreach and communications, including website management and development of communication material.
* Support the companies designing BBOP's biodiversity offset pilot projects and coordinate technical input from the BBOP Advisory Committee to the pilot projects.
* Develop the program budget and track program expenses and revenue.
* Help identify funding sources, develop funding proposals, manage technical and financial reports to donors, and manage and track grant agreements with donors.
* Run workshops and consultation to develop national and international policy frameworks to enable the implementation of biodiversity offsets on a more systematic basis.
* Liaise with Forest Trends' teams working on other programs catalyzing ecosystem service markets, including the Ecosystem Marketplace, Katoomba Group, Business Development Facility, Communities Program and China Program, and financial and operational management.

The successful candidate will have a graduate degree and at least 2 years of project management or other relevant work experience. They will be highly motivated, proactive and outcome-oriented, demonstrate initiative and good judgment, and be well organized, with good prioritization and time management skills and attention to detail. Experience in development/fundraising advantageous. With strong analytical and communication skills, they will be a capable team player. They will be proficient in budget management using excel, and fluent in English, preferably with a strong second language.
