AmeriCorps Lead Instructor -Eagle Valley Center

May 15, 2006 through October 15, 2006 

 

SAGA's Eagle Valley Center (EVC) is a growing adventure-based education program and retreat facility located in a beautiful valley, 25 miles north of Juneau, Alaska.

Lead Instructors plan, coordinate and implement challenge course programs, Adventure Camps, extended wilderness trips, and provide school based activities throughout their term.

This position varies with the time of year - in the summer it is primarily field-based and entails direct involvement with participants including instruction, guidance and overnight supervision.

Lead Instructors also serve in support roles such as logistics, food preparation, facility maintenance and housekeeping, and related needs during trips. During the school year they facilitate programming at the Eagle Valley Center, and at local schools and other youth agencies. 

Qualifications:

Physical ability to lead outdoor, adventure-based programs and activities in all weather conditions (especially rain) and a variety of terrain. Experience in challenge course facilitation and stages of group development. Sea kayaking, backpacking, and minimum impact camping knowledge, skills.

Experience working with youth and teens in a camp/outdoor environment. Local/regional natural history knowledge (preferred). WFR medical certification.

Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication and leadership skills - ability to work in varied settings indoor and outdoor. Valid drivers license and safe driving record.

Ability to be a positive role model, National Background check upon hire. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound (Just kidding!).

Responsibilities:

Participate in and complete staff training. Plan, develop, implement and lead EVC adventure-based programs including challenge courses, Adventure Camps and other tailored programs (Field and school based).

Serve as support staff for field programs (kitchen, logistical and transportation, administrative, residential supervision, housekeeping, and equipment preparation, repair and maintenance)

Plan and prepare program itineraries, agendas and menus. Lead and teach program components such as Leave No Trace camping skills, technical sea, kayaking skills and belaying on the High Ropes Course during field season. Lead other cooperative games and activities during the school year.

Work non-traditional hours (weekends, overnights, and extended periods of time) Transition into school based programming

Benefits: $1100/mo Living Stipend; Annual Leave and all state government holidays; Education Award of $2362.50 upon successful completion of term of service.
