Pro Mujer is a women's development organization whose mission is to provide Latin America's poorest women with the means to build livelihoods for themselves and their families through micro-lending, business training, health education, and links to affordable primary healthcare.

Pro Mujer establishes sustainable microfinance institutions that offer credit and training programs geared to the needs of poor, undereducated women who either operate a small business or would like to open one.

Job Description:

The Financial Officer will ensure sound financial management of Pro Mujer International's resources (in NY) and support the overall financial management of Pro Mujer's microfinance institutions (MFI's) in Latin America.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Financial Resource Management:
    Responsible for all aspects of resource management for Pro Mujer International (PMI) including: supervision of accounting process for PMI, budget planning, budget control, financial reporting, compliance with donor and lender requirements (including reporting), and investment of excess liquidity. Managing the spending on grants and creating budgets for grant proposals (25%).   
  • Loan Fund Management:
    Manage the Loan Fund and increase it substantially by $10 to $20 million during the next five years. Manage the liquidity, find investors and disburse the loans to PM affiliates as needed. Work closely with and develop all the reports for the loan fund committee (20%).   
  • Financial performance monitoring and oversight:
    Monitor Pro Mujer MFI's financial performance and liaise with the Finance Committee of the Pro Mujer International Board and local boards to ensure financial oversight and risk management (15%).   
  • Internal control/Financial control:
    Coordinate and supervise the international audit program (internal and external) and responsible for consolidated audited financial statements. Oversee compliance with tax reporting requirements in the U.S. Responsible for documenting policies and procedures for financial management of PMI and participate in the development and review of international financial policies with input from Pro Mujer's MFI's program staff, taking into account microfinance best practices (15%).   
  • Indirect technical assistance:
    Provide support to MFI staff in Latin America in all financial management issues including the coordination of the MIS project needs. Oversee other indirect technical assistance including the following: answering questions about financial reporting, financial projections and budgets, audit, financial analysis and benchmarking and disseminating industry best practices and research regarding financial management (15%).   
  • Strategic Microfinance Projects:
    Lead efforts on major strategic international initiatives such as, analysis of the sustainability of human development services, efforts to automate product costing, remittances, and MFI regulation and transformation (10%).

Job Qualifications:

Knowledge, skills and qualities:  

  • Financial statement and variance analysis;   
  • Solid understanding of financial accounting;   
  • Risk management skills;   
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish;   
  • Experience with Microfinance, preferred;   
  • Knowledge of U.S. government grants rules and regulations, preferred;   
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly Microsoft excel;   
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and strong cross-cultural skills.
Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, economics, business or finance;   
  • MBA or Masters degree in Finance, Economics, Business;   
  • Experience in financial management with a microfinance or financial institution a plus;   
  • Non-profit management experience, desired;   
  • Project management or team leader experience;   
  • International experience, preferred.
