The Bay Area Alliance for Sustainable Communities (Bay Area Alliance) is a multi-stakeholder consortium of 45 organizations established in 1997 to develop and implement an action plan to promote a more sustainable way to grow in the region. The Bay Area Alliance Steering Committee - composed of representatives of the Sierra Club, Urban Habitat Program, Association of Bay Area Governments, Greenbelt Alliance, Bay Conservation and Development Commission, Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Pacific Gas & Electric, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group and the Bay Area Council - is requesting qualifications for candidates for the Executive Director position of the Bay Area Alliance.

The Executive Director primary duties would be to:

(a) Act as the secretariat for the Bay Area Alliance by logistically planning and implementing the Quarterly meeting of the Bay Area Alliance. Duties would include notification of meetings to members, planning meeting meetings - securing guest speakers, and taking notes and reporting on decisions of the Bay Area Alliance to its members.

(b) Facilitate meetings convened by the Bay Area Alliance for the purpose of bringing a broad cross section of stakeholders together in a unique regional forum to address issues of regional significance.

(c) With direction from the Bay Area Alliance Steering Committee, develop an Implementation Action Plan for the commitments to action made in the Compact for a Sustainable Bay Area. The Implementation Action Plan would consider how the Bay Area Alliance could update and use its Sustainable Indicators to benchmark progress toward sustainable development for the region. The Action Plan would describe the structure of the organization and funding necessary to achieve its outcomes. By direction of the Bay Area Alliance Steering Committee the Action Plan may be initially directed to achieve three or less of the Commitments to Action.

(d) Provide a targeted approach that the Bay Area Alliance members could use to achieve the Regional Livability Footprint Project and Smart Growth Vision. This would include a plan to advocate for such a land use plan at the local, regional and state levels.

(e) Coordinate, plan and produce the Quarterly meetings of the Bay Area Alliance membership.

(f) Coordinate raising funds to support the Implementation Action Plan, working with foundations, possible private donors and corporate sponsors.

Skill Set Sought:

*Ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders and steering committee to drive agreements and follow-up action. The applicant should skilled at in person meetings as well as effective use of email, faxing and phone calls.
* Organized to complete progress reports and write grants to fund the work of the Bay Area Alliance.
* Ability to facilitate meetings of diverse members to achieve outcomes and action. Part of this ability includes the ability to develop structures (formal and informal) to receive input and achieve output on issues so that Bay Area Alliance members are committed to an action to be taken

Salary and Time Commitment

Salary will be based on qualifications and based on a half-time commitment for two year or until additional funds have been raised.
