Description

Botanical Coordinator - Andes-Amazon Endemic Species Mapping Project

CLOSING DATE: June 17, 2005

PROJECT DURATION: 16 Months

NatureServe is a non-profit conservation organization that provides the scientific information and tools needed to help guide effective conservation action. NatureServe and its network of natural heritage programs are the leading source for information about rare and endangered species and threatened ecosystems.

NatureServe represents an international network of biological inventories-known as natural heritage programs or conservation data centers-operating in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean. Together we collect and manage detailed local information on plants, animals, and ecosystems, and develop information products, data management tools, and conservation services to help meet important conservation needs. The objective scientific information about species and ecosystems developed by NatureServe is used by all sectors of society, including conservation groups, government agencies, corporations, academia, and the public, to make informed decisions about managing our natural resources.

NatureServe is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, with regional offices in Boston, Minneapolis, Durham, Boulder, and Ottawa, Ontario. NatureServe offers a results-oriented and collaborative workplace where a common mission provides focus and excitement and where staff are empowered to take ownership of projects and mission success. This position is not eligible for the full benefits program offered by NatureServe.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Botanical Coordinator will coordinate the timely delivery of endemic species databases from external partners in Peru, Bolivia, and the United States. The Coordinator will review these databases for errors, duplications, and format differences and join them into one final database. The Coordinator will also be responsible for filling gaps in databases by contacting additional herbaria on a national and international level. The Botanical Coordinator will communicate with regional experts for the revision of species distribution maps produced from the species databases.

The project "Mapping Ecological Systems and Endemic Species in Support of Conservation Planning in the upper Amazon Watershed of Peru and Bolivia" will make significant strides toward understanding the biodiversity and protection patterns of representative endemic species and all ecological systems across the study area. This position represents an excellent opportunity for the application of science in conservation, establishing connections with a wide range of scientists, and occasional travel to Bolivia and Peru. As leaders in this effort, NatureServe will work closely with partner institutions to carry out the science, planning, management and monitoring aspects of this project.
