Description

For more than 30 years, the National Association of State PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups) has been a driving force in advancing the public interest throughout the nation. Working at the local, state, and federal levels, PIRG staff have strived to protect the environment and public health, safeguard consumers, and ensure a fair and transparent government truly accountable to its citizens. Despite powerful special interest opposition, our efforts have led to numerous new protections for our environment, safety, and public health, many the first of their kind in the nation.

In the halls of Washington, DC, PIRG lobbyists have backed new rules to reduce diesel vehicle pollution while defeating a dirty, dangerous polluter-crafted energy bill year after year. PIRG corporate campaigners have gone from headquarters to headquarters to increase Coke's and Pepsi's use of recycled plastic and improve the forest-protection policies of Staples and Office Depot. And on the state level, PIRG staff have passed many of the nation's strongest laws on issues such as limiting power plant emissions (Massachusetts), stopping predatory lending (New Mexico), requiring renewable energy production (California), regulating water-runoff (Wisconsin), and reducing use of toxic mercury (Washington state). Moreover, PIRG staff have helped take these victories beyond their state's borders and implement them across the nation. For example, when PIRG won a clean-cars standard in California, PIRG advocates soon passed similar legislation in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Job Description

In addition to state advocacy staff and other campaign projects, many of the central PIRG departments are housed in our over 90-person Boston office. These departments assist State PIRG staff across the nation with nonprofit development including recruitment, financial services, publication design, fundraising operations, and legal compliance. Administrative staff in these departments work to further develop their department's particular area of expertise while simultaneously helping build the organization overall and supporting its mission and campaigns.

Current openings include:

Office Manager - The Office Manager oversees the daily operation of the Boston office, ensuring that support is in place for staff to accomplish their public interest work in the most effective way possible. Responsibilities include budget and administrative oversight of the office, building and equipment maintenance, coordinating special events and training conferences, and supervising the office receptionist.

MASSPIRG Executive Assistant - The Executive Assistant provides direct support for the Executive Director and policy advocates of the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG). Duties include managing organizational systems and budgets, helping coordinate MASSPIRG campaigns, administering foundational grants, coordinating interns, event planning, and arranging staff meetings.

Creative Team Administrator - PIRG employs its own in-house team of writers, graphic designers and multi-media experts to produce the materials needed to build citizen support for our campaigns. The Administrator will provide support to all of the creative team, managing the department's project list, coordinating client services and resources, overseeing departmental systems and budgets, maintaining material archives, and managing special projects.

MASSPIRG Administrative Assistant - The Administrative Assistant provides support to MASSPIRG advocacy staff and maintains the reception area; greeting visitors, coordinating mail and package deliveries, and managing incoming calls. Other responsibilities include overseeing MASSPIRG's volunteer program, managing organizational systems, compiling reports, assisting with special event and training logistics, and managing supplies and intradepartmental systems for the entire Boston office.

Financial Staff - The Financial Department provides financial, accounting, and business management services for all PIRG-related organizations, managing a combined annual budget of approximately $20 million. Staff responsibilities include overseeing collection of funds, reconciliation of bank accounts, processing bills and payroll, training PIRG staff on business management practices, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with state and federal reporting requirements.
