Forest Conservation Technician, AmeriCorps Position

Position Summary:

The Forest Conservation Technician will be instructed in, and supervised during, the implementation of techniques that are designed to protect, maintain and develop forestlands, wildlife habitat and other natural resources for environmental, economic and recreational purposes. The NWSA-PCC AmeriCorps member will also maintain and/or improve the current facilities and property at Camp Four Echoes, enabling the development and implementation of new opportunities for girls and adult volunteers to learn about environmental stewardship and conservation.

General Responsibilities:

* Forestry stewardship
* Protecting current and developing additional wildlife habitat
* Watershed and shoreline conservation
* Maintaining trails and recreational areas
* Preparation of sites for tree-planting (will include cutting/trimming, slash-burning, etc.)
* Conduct insect and disease surveys
* Training in noxious weed control and the use of herbicides
* Assist/Supervise Girl Scouts and volunteers with forest, wildlife habitat and watershed conservation projects
* Maintain and repair machinery/equipment used at Camp Four Echoes
* Assist with maintenance and enhancement of current facilities
* Assist the Program Coordinator as required.
* Complete and submit all necessary PCC-NWSA/AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
* Attend and complete all PCC-NWSA/AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings, and national service days.
* Wear a PCC-NWSA uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.

Requirements:

* Able to lift 50 pounds unassisted
* Must be able to perform tasks in a physically active, outdoor environment
* 18 years of age or older
* U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
* Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.
* Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
* Desire to serve with people to promote education, environmental stewardship and an ethic of service.
* Communicate and interact in a positive, professional manner with various populations such as: project partner(s), colleagues, community volunteers, students and the general public.
* Serve effectively within a team ? Submit to a criminal history background check.
* Regular and reliable attendance

Full-time Member (1700/hr) Benefits Include:

* A taxable, monthly living stipend (before taxes, approximately $900/month for members).
* Upon successful completion of a full term of service, eligible members receive an education award of $4725. The education award can be used to repay qualified student loans, for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational, or for trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used.
* Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable).
* Basic medical insurance (covers members only, not dependants; vision and dental not included).
* Childcare allowance for those who qualify.
* On-site housing and utilities provided
