The Urban Planning and Policy Program (UPP) in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA), University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)plans to hire up to three (3) new tenure-track or tenured faculty members at the Assistant or Associate level to begin August 2005, subject to budget authorization.
One such position could be a joint appointment with the UIC Institute for Environmental Science and Policy. The program offers two graduate degrees, the Master of Urban Planning and Policy degree, and the Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Policy.
The program will also co-direct an undergraduate B.A. in Urban and Public Affairs with the Public Administration program in CUPPA, pending approval. The positions are part of a multi-year expansion of CUPPA based on our new 2010 Strategic Plan , which also calls for hiring in our Public Administration program.
The Urban Planning and Policy Program offers specializations in: community development, economic development, globalization and international planning, physical planning, and urban transportation.
We are interested in those candidates who can contribute to these specializations, and particularly those with a focus on urban and regional analysis, environmental policy and sustainable development, urban history and political economy, infrastructure policy, or data visualization.
Candidates must have an earned PhD or ABD status in urban planning or a related discipline, such as political science, economics, geography, engineering, sociology, or public policy. A strong commitment to an active research program and promise as a good teacher is essential.
Professional experience in the planning and policy arena is also valued. Candidates from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Salaries are to be commensurate with experience.
The University of Illinois at Chicago, with 25,000 students located just west of Chicago's Loop, is the largest public research university in the Chicago area. The College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs was created in 1995 as part of UIC's Great Cities Initiative. It houses two academic graduate programs (Urban Planning and Public Administration). In addition, the College hosts seven research centers: the Center for Urban Economic Development, the Great Cities Institute, the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, the Survey Research Laboratory, the Urban Transportation Center, the Great Cities Urban Data Visualization Lab, and the Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement. Candidates may express interest in conducting research in conjunction with CUPPA's research centers, as well as the Institute for Environmental Science and Policy.
