Description

The Executive Director of the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program (ALLP) will be the senior executive of the ALLP. Launched in 1998, the ALLP trains emerging academic leaders in environmental fields to communicate and advocate sound science to broad audiences. The ALLP currently selects 20 Leopold Leadership Fellows and conducts two major training sessions each year.

The Aldo Leopold Leadership Program has a current annual operating budget of approximately $750,000 with 3 staff members and is expected to grow in the future. The ALLP will become part of Stanford's Institute for the Environment (SIE) on January 1, 2005.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director will report through the Faculty Director of the ALLP to the Directors of SIE. The Executive Director will work closely with the Faculty Director, the SIE Directors, and the external ALLP Steering Committee. In consultation with the Faculty Director, the Executive Director will oversee all strategic planning, programmatic activities, and administrative staff, and will ensure that the organization meets its programmatic goals each year. The Executive Director should be a strategic thinker and implementer comfortable taking on a large agenda with a small staff.

The ideal candidate will develop and mentor a strong team to manage day-to-day operations while devoting appropriate time to interacting with the Faculty Director, the Steering Committee, SIE directors and staff, and other partners on such critical issues as strategic planning, fund raising, policy development, articulating the mission, vision, and goals of the organization, and positioning the ALLP for long-term sustainability by developing activities that link administrative resources, financial support, and program staff.

Qualifications

Specifically, the Executive Director should possess the following professional skills and personal attributes:

Creativity, tact, thoughtful judgment, and vision coupled with the ability to listen to others and learn from their best ideas; Strategic thinking and ability to implement to deliver on measurable results; A track record of successfully managing organizations (ideally in the education and environment realms) in a climate of growth and change, while maintaining fidelity to mission and fiscal discipline. |

Demonstrated experience developing vibrant fellowship/alumni/member networks; Outstanding communication skills and experience designing and implementing effective marketing and branding initiatives; Skills in recruiting, directing, motivating and developing staff while building a nimble yet effective infrastructure to support a small organization; Proven ability to develop projects and organizational budgets and to oversee financial details; Superb organizational and interpersonal skills with an ability to work under pressure and diplomatically prioritize sometimes-conflicting demands; and The highest level of personal and professional integrity and quality standards.
