Description
The Bronx River Alliance works in partnership with Parks & Recreation to
protect, improve and restore the Bronx River corridor and greenway. The
Alliance works with many public and private partners to ensure that the
Bronx River corridor and greenway are ecological, recreational,
educational and economic resources for the surrounding communities. The
Alliance's Education Program incorporates the Bronx River watershed as a
critical component of school and community education curricula through
the promotion of the River as an educational resource, and creates
opportunities for the public to understand and appreciate the Bronx
River.
Duties:
- Promote the Bronx River and its watershed as an educational
resource for schools and after-school programs. Coordinate teacher
training workshops, provide hands-on assistance to groups in the field,
loan equipment and materials for water quality monitoring and other
river studies, and manage a program that awards supplies and services to
Bronx River teachers. - Coordinate and continue to build the Volunteer Monitoring Program
at 15 water quality monitoring stations. - Staff the Education Team, which serves as a networking source for
educators conducting Bronx River projects; facilitate annual
prioritization of projects and keep minutes. - Work with a consultant to create a Bronx River Classroom
curriculum packet, adapting materials from Bronx River teachers to meet
New York State standards. Work closely with the school system to
incorporate Bronx River projects into school curricula. - Organize student symposia and educator roundtables to exchange
ideas and information. - Manage the work of a seasonal Canoe Guide to introduce the Bronx
River to youth, families, public officials, etc. by coordinating and
leading canoe trips. - Write content for public education publications, the website,
interpretive signs, and grant proposals and reports.
Required Qualifications:
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of
experience in community work or community centered activities in an area
related to the duties described above; or - High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience
in community work or community centered activities in an area related to
the duties as described above; or - Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2"
above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of
experience as described to "1" above.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and two years experience in the educational
field. Master's degree in community or environmental education a plus. - Experience with the K-12 public education system, preferably in
New York, and knowledge of New York State educational standards.
Curriculum or program development experience. - Knowledge of ecological principles related to river systems.
Experience with field research and data collection. - Accomplished writer.
- Ability to find additional education resources.
- Valid New York State driver's license.
Salary: $38,986 - $56,396
