Description

The Site Stewardship Program brings people together to protect ecologically sensitive areas within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In this program, individuals work to restore the ecological integrity of selected sites and to protect rare and endangered species. Volunteers support these efforts at regular workdays events and get involved in long term projects. In addition to restoration, volunteers engage in public outreach and education.


Intern Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Organize and facilitate drop-in volunteer program which meets every Saturday.
  • Correspond with volunteers by providing initial program information to new volunteers, follow-up calls to returning volunteers, management of the volunteer hotline, and upkeep of the volunteer database
  • Assist with development, layout, editing and distribution of bi-monthly Site Stewardship newsletter
  • Prepare materials (displays, posters, flyers, slide shows, etc.) for fairs and festivals to promote participation in Site Stewardship Program and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area
  • Create and distribute flyers and press releases for outreach and volunteer recruitment
  • Organize and plan special volunteer recognition events
  • Assist with website development for Site Stewardship Program
  • Assist in the development of a school year environmental education program with a local school
  • Assist with field restoration activities at each of the Stewardship Sites.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm and experience with public speaking and contact, enjoy working with diverse groups of people
  • Experience or desire to learn desktop publishing
  • Interest in ecological restoration and the National Park Service
  • Ability to work well within a team and take a leadership role
  • Desire to work both outdoors and indoors
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Ability to work with high / middle school students


Desired Qualifications:

  • Computer experience including Microsoft Word, Excel, Pagemaker, Photoshop
  • Bi-cultural / bi-lingual skills

Terms:


Desired start date: June 1, 2003
Length of position: 6 months - 1 year
Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday
Reliable transportation required: no
