Description

The Site Stewardship Program is a community-based habitat restoration program that works throughout the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The program is dedicated to the ecological restoration of high priority natural areas (especially endangered species habitat) that have sustained extensive invasion and/or disturbance. In addition to ecological restoration, stewards engage in public outreach, interpretation and education.


Intern Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Perform leadership roles in high school and middle school environmental education programs
  • Plan workdays and activities for inner-city middle school programs and prepare materials (tools, displays, plants)
  • Assist with workdays at a high school native plant nursery
  • Participate in and assist with weekly Site Stewardship restoration workdays
  • Organize and plan special student recognition events
  • Assist with a summer environmental education program for low income minority students


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm about working with middle- or high school-aged students
  • Interest in ecological restoration and the National Park Service
  • Ability to work well within a team and take a leadership role as needed
  • Desire to work both outdoors and indoors
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision


Desired Qualifications:

  • Environmental education experience
  • Plant nursery experience
  • Experience and/or desire to work with culturally and economically diverse people
  • Computer experience in word processing and database operations
  • Bi-cultural / bi-lingual skills


Terms:


Desired Start Date: June 1 2003
Length of Position: 10 months - 1 year
Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday
Reliable transportation required: no
Drivers license required: yes
Does position provide out-of-pocket expenses? Yes, $15/day
