Description

Background:


The Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) is a non-profit service, conservation, and education organization modeled after the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps. The VYCC instills the values of personal responsibility, hard work, education, and respect for the environment in young people. Corps Members, young adults 16-24, work, live, and learn together in small groups, completing priority conservation projects throughout Vermont under the guidance of highly-trained leaders. Potential projects include state park management, bridge and shelter construction, and trail maintenance.


Duties:


Co-lead a crew of eight to ten high school and college-age crew members performing high priority conservation projects throughout Vermont. Train, motivate, supervise, and support crew members. Facilitate VYCCs daily education program based on contemporary issues. Create a sense of community with a diverse crew of young people. Interface with state, federal, and local land managers.

Work projects typically include streambank stabilization, trail maintenance, bridge construction, and carpentry. Positions available in backcountry and front country, as well as residential and non-residential settings. Couples encouraged to apply. Positions run late May through late August 2003.


Qualifications:


Maturity and ability to motivate young adults. Excellent communication and organization skills. Self confidence. Strong work ethic. Outdoor leadership experience, knowledge of trail work and natural resource management, and experience with group facilitation and experiential education a plus. Level of First Aid certification dependent on position. Minimum age for Conservation Crew Leaders is 22.


Benefits:


$360 - $480/wk. plus room and board for applicable positions. In addition, qualifying staff may also receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (for tuition or student loan repayment) between $1,000 and $2,500 (amount depends on the length of employment). Includes a paid, nationally recognized training. Conservation Crew Leaders will develop skills related to crew management, youth development, and team building facilitation in addition to receiving training on technical work skills, hand tool use, and project site management. J-1 VISAs will be provided for international staff. International applicants should apply by January 31, 2003.
