Description
Background:
The Sharon Audubon Center's 1143-acre wildlife sanctuary contains 11 miles of
trails through varied habitats including ponds, streams, forests and fields. In
addition, we have an exhibit center, which features seasonal displays and live
animals, and our bookstore and gift shop. Audubon Sharon is dedicated to
offering life-changing hands-on education experiences to students. We strive to
teach awareness and respect for nature and prepare individuals for future land
stewardship.
Duties:
Interns are involved with all aspects of the operation of a nature center. The
primary responsibility is environmental education.
Interns develop curriculum
materials and teach a wide variety of topics (discovery walks, pond explorations,
birds of prey, reptiles, insect investigations and more) to on-site and outreach
audiences of all ages.
Interns also help care for resident reptiles and raptors, and
assist in wildlife rehabilitation. The resident animals act as ambassadors for their
species and they are an integral part of our education programs.
Additional duties
include creating and maintaining exhibits, answering requests for information, and
helping with many other facets of a nature center's day to day operation.
Qualifications:
Completion of at least two years of college coursework in the environmental or
life sciences.
Some teaching experience and/or curriculum development is
necessary. The most important assets are a strong natural history background,
enthusiasm, commitment, a desire to learn, flexibility, and the ability to work well
with others.
Compensation:
Salary is $100 per week plus housing. Intern quarters at the Audubon Center in
Sharon include two private bedrooms, and a shared kitchen, bath, and living
room. Dates: February to May
