Description

Background:

CoPIRG is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that advocates on behalf of the public interest. Founded in the 1970s, CoPIRG has a strong tradition of working on environmental, consumer and democracy issues.

More and more people are discovering Colorado's exceptional quality of life. But Colorado's inefficient highways will not meet the transportation needs of a million additional Colorado residents expected by 2020. The sprawling development that currently accompanies Colorado's booming growth will greatly impact traffic congestion, air and water quality, transportation needs and land use decisions. If nothing is done to provide varied, efficient and readily accessible alternative modes of transportation in the front range and around the state, the quality of life for all Coloradans will be in jeopardy.

CoPIRG's transportation program promotes transit solutions to Colorado's transportation problems. Specifically we seek to build support for a full build out of the Denver metro area's light rail system, transit solutions to congestion in the I-70 corridor, and the North Front Range.

In addition, we are working to develop sustainable funding for transit at the state level. CoPIRG also works to promote transit-oriented development and stop sprawl-inducing highway projects.

Duties:

Advocates have a broad range of responsibilities:

  1. Research - Build the case for transit solutions to traffic problems in Colorado.
  2. Direct advocacy - present and persuade decision-makers (e.g., state and federal legislators, city council members, agency directors, etc.) to adopt them.
  3. Media work - build relationships with local and statewide reporters; generate coverage in the media of our work (both to educate the public and to build support for our policy solutions); hold news conferences; meet with editorial boards.
  4. Coalition building - work with other groups (of all kinds, not just environmental, but also religious, business, recreational, partisan, labor unions, public health associations, etc.) to build broad support for our work.
  5. Fundraising - raise funds to fund the transportation program through foundation grant seeking.
