Duties and Responsibilities:

Education Program Assistants will work directly with public middle and high school science teachers to implement long-term field studies in urban watersheds.

Assistants will participate in these studies, and will spend a portion of each week at the field sites for which they are responsible. A typical day might include testing water quality, inputting results on the website database, supervising high school students, including some with developmental disabilities, and observing birds.

In addition, assistants will work on the continuing development of UEI curriculum, including researching, writing, and creating activities. The specific tasks will include:

1) Assist teachers and students in data collection (water quality, avian diversity, and a variety of other studies) at field study sites throughout the Boston area, and then work with them back in the classroom on data analysis and other field-related lessons.

2) Create activities that help teachers integrate field ecology curriculum into the classroom, including activities for students with developmental disabilities. Develop activities that integrate data management into the classroom through data observation, collection, field protocols, and the website.

3) Deliver presentations to schools and community groups.

4) Complete weekly reports about each study site

5) Develop protocols for existing and future field studies based on educational frameworks.

6) Contribute field statistics for the annual report.

7) Coordinate transportation, equipment orders and training workshops and conferences.

8) Perform general office tasks, including communicating with teachers and various agencies through e-mail, phone and fax, as well as inputting data on the computer and website and filing.

9) Attend watershed-related meetings and staff meetings.

Skills and Qualifications:

We are looking for a hard-working, dedicated, self-starter who desires a rewarding and challenging experience in environmental education.

Only applicants dedicated to a year of public service through AmeriCorps*VISTA, the domestic Peace Corps, should apply. You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States. A positive attitude and sense of humor are a must. Also:

1) Background in the natural sciences, environmental studies or education is preferred.

2) Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, field ecology methods.

3) Good verbal and written communication skills.

4) Desire to work with diverse groups of people and to make a difference in an urban area.

5) Bi-lingual skills (Spanish) are a plus.

6) Computer literacy (MS Word & Excel).

7) Understanding of, or willingness to learn, how to use a video camera and edit tape.

8) Be able to perform and coordinate a variety of duties and deal with deadlines.

9) Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as a team.

The Urban Ecology Institute works to promote the health of urban ecosystems through research, education, and advocacy. UEI's Urban Ecology Field Studies Program works with public middle and high school teachers and students in long-term, hands-on environmental field studies at urban sites throughout the Boston area and will soon be expanded for national use.

Current studies include water quality, avian diversity, social ecology, and coyote, crow, and turtle behavior studies using radiotelemetry. UEI's Natural Cities Program is developing a national model for linking community-based research with advocacy to understand, protect, and restore urban ecosystems by investigating the intersection of ecological and social concerns to identify critical resources and develop plans for their protection.

Pay:

This is a full time position for one year with a living allowance of $843/month through the AmeriCorps*VISTA Program.

You will also receive $4,725 towards education expenses or a $1200 stipend at the end of your year of service.
