Duties and Responsibilities:

The Inclusion Program AmeriCorps*VISTA is responsible for the coordination of the Urban Ecology Field Studies Inclusion Program at seven Boston area public middle and high schools.

The VISTA member will serve as the key communicator between general education teachers, special education teachers, classroom assistants and UEI, working to improve and expand the Inclusion Program.

In addition, the Inclusion Program VISTA will contribute to inclusion program development through research, writing, and creating activities. The specific tasks will include:

1) Coordinate classroom visits, field visits, and other activities between general education teachers, special education teachers, and classroom assistants.

2) Observe and report on inclusion field and classroom activities.

3) Work with teachers and consultants to adapt UEI curriculum for students with special needs and develop new field protocols.

4) Assist with annual evaluation of the Inclusion Program.

5) Deliver presentations to school and community groups.

6) Coordinate transportation, equipment orders, training workshops, and conferences.

7) General office tasks including communicating with teachers and various agencies through e-mail, phone and fax, as well as inputting data on the computer and website and filing.

8) Attend watershed-related meetings and staff meetings.

9) Provide assistance, as needed, to UEI Co-Director on various projects.

Skills and Qualifications:

We are looking for a hard-working, dedicated, self-starter who desires a rewarding and challenging experience in environmental education. Although prior experience in special education is not required, applicants must be comfortable working with children with special needs.

You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States.

Only applicants dedicated to a year of public service through AmeriCorps*VISTA, the domestic Peace Corps, should apply. A positive attitude and sense of humor are a must. Also:

1) Interest in special education and working with students with special needs.

2) Background in the natural sciences, environmental studies, or education preferred.

3) Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, field ecology methods.

4) Strong verbal and written communication skills.

5) Desire to work with diverse groups of people and to make a difference in an urban area.

6) Bi-lingual skills (Spanish) are a plus.

7) Computer literacy (MS Word & Excel).

8) Understanding of, or willingness to learn, how to use a video camera and edit tape.

9) Be able to perform and coordinate a variety of duties and deal with deadlines.

10) Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as a team.

The Urban Ecology Institute works to promote the health of urban ecosystems through research, education, and advocacy. UEI's Urban Ecology Field Studies Program works with public middle and high school teachers and students in long-term, hands-on environmental field studies at urban sites throughout the Boston area and will soon be expanded for national use.

Current studies include water quality, avian diversity, social ecology, and coyote, crow, and turtle behavior studies using radiotelemetry. UEI's Natural Cities Program is developing a national model for linking community-based research with advocacy to understand, protect, and restore urban ecosystems by investigating the intersection of ecological and social concerns to identify critical resources and develop plans for their protection.

Pay:

This is a full time position for one year. Your living allowance will be $843/month through the AmeriCorps*VISTA Program. You will also receive $4,725 towards education expenses or a $1200 stipend at the end of your term of service.
