Description
Working principally on the Lower Santee, Pee Dee, and possibly Savannah Rivers, the Aquatic Ecologist will initially focus on an ecological characterization of habitats and species associated with these rivers, and the relationship between river flows and ecosystem viability.
Ecologist will develop innovative ecological concepts and tools to identify and evaluate freshwater and estuarine aquatic targets, and rank the quality of and identify the threats to targets occurring at respective sites.
Also, ecologist will be responsible for identifying and assessing the distribution of aquatic conservation targets and working with ecoregional planning teams and aquatic ecology experts in federal, state and academic institutions.
The Ecologist may also make fundraising calls and supervise graduate students or technicians, and oversee research contracts.
In addition, this position will work with a team of other TNC aquatic scientists thoughout the Southeast Division to develop comprehensive approaches to aquatic conservation at a divisional scale and will participate in developing site conservation plans.
The emphasis will be on ecological characterization of wetland, riverine and estuarine habitats and the relationship of their condition to river flows, as regulated by upstream impoundments.
The information generated by this Aquatic Ecologist will be evaluated as part of FERC re-licensing of the upstream dams (and ACOE-managed dams on the Savannah Rivers.
Duties will include field work, defining scientific hypotheses and designing investigations to test them, working with academic researchers, overseeing research contracts, graduate students, and possibly technicians, developing science-based information products to share with partners, utilities and public officials.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Masters degree in Freshwater Aquatic Ecology, Limnology, Environmental Management or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2) Three-five years experience in the field of assessment of freshwater ecosystems and/or the conservation of freshwater systems.
3) Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS, ArcView) database and spreadsheet software desirable.
4) Course work in statistics, especially multivariate analyses, desired.
5) Knowledge of biologic/hydrologic monitoring technologies and practice, including field procedures, QA/QC procedures, and the selection of appropriate laboratory analytical methods for flow, temperature, water quality or bioassessment parameters.
6) Knowledge of freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity of the Southeastern US Coastal Plain.
7) Ability to compile and organize scientific data with attention to detail.
8) Duties may require non-routine analysis, research and follow-through.
9) Exercises independent judgement. Work affords significant opportunity to act independently on assigned tasks.
10) Communication skills include proven ability in written and oral communications and the ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups including donors, board members and the general public. You must have good presentation skills and the ability to make alliances and gain support of others over whom there is no supervisory authority. You must also have the ability to simplify and explain complex scientific data to general audiences.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
You must be willing to work long hours in an isolated setting. This position also requires occasional physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Work involves several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job hazard’s where there is some possibility of injury.
