Description

The Worldwatch Institute, a global research and publishing organization that focuses on environmental, social and development issues, is looking for a Media Coordinator who will implement the Institute’s media outreach strategy, organize press conferences and briefings and build and strengthen relationships with journalists around the world.

The ideal candidate will be a public relations or journalism graduate with 1-2 years media relations experience, who on top of being a good writer, is well organized, deadline focused, and willing to learn a lot of new things fast. The position requires someone who is not afraid of juggling a number of tasks simultaneously and has an interest in and understanding of global environment and development issues.

While global outreach is an integral part of the Worldwatch mission and outreach exceeds 7000 clips a year, the Communications Department is small and the media coordinator can’t be afraid of hard (and sometimes menial) work. Approximately 20 percent of the workload will be administrative. Tasks will range from organizing press and stakeholder events and building media contacts, to responding to press requests, pitching stories to the media and updating lists. We need someone who has good computer skills and is proficient on Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Media Coordinator will:

? Plan and manage logistics of press conferences and outreach events including placement of speakers, handling invitations and RSVPs from participants, identifying and preparing venues, arranging food and beverages, as well as taking care of post-event follow-up activities.

? Develop and strengthen relationships with key media contacts, keeping them updated on Worldwatch activities and upcoming publications and press conferences.

? Respond to calls from the media, (arranging for the dissemination of information and organizing interviews with researchers) and pitch events and written materials to the media.

? Oversee continued maintenance of targeted press, NGO, and government lists, (on Access and listservs).

? Assist Research staff in building press contacts pertinent to their areas of specialization and organizing meetings and lunches with key press in the U.S. and overseas.

? Manage basic excerpt requests.

? Assist in implementing communications campaigns.

? Provide administrative assistance to the Communications Department and World Watch Magazine as needed.

Minimum Knowledge and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with specialization in Public Relations or Journalism and 1-2 years relevant work experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Advanced skills in using Microsoft Word, Excel and Access
- Experience in developing news angles and pitching reporters
- Attention to detail and deadlines
- Eligibility to work in the U.S.

The Media Coordinator will be offered a competitive salary as well as excellent medical, dental, retirement and vacation benefits. We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage women and minorities to apply.

To apply, send your resume, cover letter, salary expectations and two writing samples by March 11, 2002 via mail or email to:
