Description
Graduate research fellowships are being offered as part of the research
program of the Canada Research Chair and colleagues in the Department of
Rural Economy, University of Alberta, Canada (www.re.ualberta.ca).
Up to 2 research fellowships are available. Fellowship holders must be
enrolled full-time in one of the following programs:
· MSc Agricultural and Resource Economics
· PhD Environmental and Natural Resource Economics (joint with the
Department of Economics)
· PhD Agricultural and Resource Economics
· PhD Forest Economics
Research fellows may choose to be involved in existing research projects in
the department or may engage in new projects. Some examples of recent
research projects include:
· Incorporating Non-Timber Resource Use by Aboriginal Peoples into
Forest Management
· Climate change, land use and policy
· Impacts of regulatory changes on recreational fishing behaviour and
value
· Developing measures of passive use values (existence values, value
for protected areas, wilderness) using constructed value methods
· Complexity and economic choice behaviour
· Valuation of human health aspects of changes in environmental
quality
· Developing indicators of economic sustainability
The research fellowships are 12-month renewable appointments with
competitive stipends. Excellent computer support and funding opportunities
for travel to professional meetings is also available.

Opportunities for interdisciplinary research via the Sustainable Forest
Management Network (www.ualberta.ca/sfm ) and other programs are available
and encouraged. For example, several students participate in the Boreal
Ecology and Economics Synthesis Team (BEEST) an interdisciplinary research
group focusing on sustainable forest management
