~ Since its opening in 1981, Christodora's Manice Education Center (MEC) has provided over 25,000 students with outdoor, leadership and environmental experiences. For most students, MEC offers a first opportunity to be immersed in the wilderness - the first mountain to climb, first river to paddle, first view of the constellations of stars. ~  

Christodora, a 116 year-old non-profit organization offering high-quality environmental education and leadership training to motivated New York City youth, is actively seeking an
environmental education professional to bring energy, dedication, and organization to Christodora's urban programs. 

Responsibilities  

  • The Environmental Education Program Coordinator will have a primary role coordinating, recruiting participants for, teaching in, and leading afterschool and/or weekend programming in NYC from September through June.
  • Candidates will coordinate, design, and deliver engaging hands-on experiences for middle/high school youth to understand concepts in place based ecology, outdoor discovery activities, hikes, teambuilding activities, and service projects. 
  • The position will coordinate with Christodora's partner schools to develop teaching schedules, help requisition teaching supplies, and may occasionally help teach for Christodora's Winter Ecology Program (CWEP). CWEP brings hands on environmental education directly into approx. 20 schools across 2 seven-week semesters from November through March. 
  • Throughout communication with partner schools and programs, candidates will represent all of Christodora's programs and actively recruit new participants. 
  • This position will spend 2-3 weeks camping overnight at the Great Mountain Forest in CT (also used by Yale's School of Forestry) and assist the Summer Ecology Program Director to deliver a field based science research program for 12-24 high school scholars.
  • Duties will include research facilitation, teaching, hiking, logistics coordination, & overnight supervision. 

Qualifications

  • Are an environmental educator with a background in the ecological sciences and have experience providing a purposefully engaging, inquiry based approach for NYC youth.
  • Are passionate about sparking an interest in the natural sciences and motivating youth from underserved communities to be active environmental stewards.
  • Enjoys collaborating to set and meet measurable goals for program impact. 
  • Easily build rapport with NYC students, reaching a broad, diverse, and inclusive environment; and knows the developmental needs of middle/ high school youth.
  • Are able to lead teaching assistants to uphold high standards as role models and mentors for our youth.
  • Are able to communicate the goals of urban programs fluently to teachers, principals, parents, and partners to recruit and ensure high levels of engagement in Christodora's programs.  

Requirements: 

  • BA or BS in related discipline.
  • Travel via public transportation to schools and program locations in NYC, occasional visits to program locations in remote areas north of the city.
  • Must be comfortable hiking, camping, and sleeping outdoors. Valid Driver's License preferred.
  • Flexible schedules.
  • Background checks and medical physical required. 

Compensation: Salary is negotiable and based on experience.
