Description

We are a community of Coast Salish peoples descended from groups and bands originating from the Skagit and Samish River valleys, coastal areas surrounding nearby bays and waters, and numerous islands including Fidalgo, Camano, Whidbey and the San Juan Islands.

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is a federally recognized Indian Tribe that occupies the Swinomish Indian Reservation on Puget Sound in Washington State. The Tribe is governed by a Constitution and Bylaws that was originally adopted in 1936 and by the Swinomish Senate, the tribe's governing body, which is comprised of 11 elected members that serve staggered five year terms.

If you have answered yes to the above, than we have a great opportunity for you. The Swinomish Tribe is looking for an Environmental Policy Analyst to help us with natural resource management. We are located in the most magnificent place in the Pacific Northwest, where the Skagit River meets Puget Sound.

Our tribe has the 2nd largest fishing fleet in the United States and is committed to natural resource protection for the next 7 generations. Ninety minutes from both Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia we are especially proud of our Tribal Sovereignty and our success with strengthening tribal culture and traditions.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with the Environmental Policy Director in the evaluation of Federal, State and local legislative, legal and permit specific actions and assess their impacts to the Swinomish Tribal fisheries resources.
  • This position entails the development of Tribal strategies and recommended courses of action to support and Tribal resources.
  • The job will entail a mixture of technical skills associated with Natural Resource protection, knowledge of environmental protection rules and laws, and the ability to work effectively with both Tribal and non-Tribal governments.

Qualifications 

Education, Experience and Training: 

  • Masters degree in Fisheries or Natural Resources required.
  • 5 years working on Natural Resource Policy issues.
  • Must have experience working with or for Tribal Governments.

Specific Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: 

  • Knowledge about salmon habitat and challenges associated with their sustained growth and protection.
  • Working knowledge of instream flow setting and Federal and State water rights.
  • Familiarity with Federal and State Natural Resource regulations including the Clean Water Act , NEPA and the Endangered Species Act.
  • Comfortable with public speaking.
  • Able to advocate in sometime hostile settings.
  • Ability to communicate clearly on complicated issues.
  • Ability to perform in stream field work.
