Position Overview

Borrego Solar Systems, Inc., a leading national engineering, financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance firm concentrating on the development of solar energy systems for the commercial, utility, and public sectors, seeks a Solar Technician to join our team in Northern California. This position will require travel, therefore the ideal candidate will reside in or around the Central Valley.

The solar technician will work with the regional O&M manager, the director of O&M, and the O&M data asset manager to reduce plant downtime, improve system performance through preventative measures, and increase Borrego customer satisfaction through quality service and professional behavior.

There are three primary functions of this position:

  • Perform electrical preventative maintenance procedures on solar power plants. (55%)
  • Respond to reactive service issues at Borrego managed solar power plants to troubleshoot and resolve problems. (30%)
  • To document and report on your preventative maintenance visits and service calls. (15%)

Responsibilities

  • Performing preventative maintenance on up to 100mW of solar power.
  • Responding to and resolving customer warranty problems.
  • Performing troubleshooting and remediation measures on site to increase plant uptime.
  • Interfacing with SCADA/DAS system to understand communication problems on site.
  • Interfacing with Power components (Inverter, CBSS, Recombiner, Combiner box, PV module) to solve production problems.
  • Input detailed case and maintenance data into CRM.
  • Primary client touch point and responsible for client expectation management.
  • Communicating trends in troubleshooting and maintenance to the O&M department to improve processes.
  • Passion for electrical power systems and keeping them operational.
  • Managing Labor sources to process remediation and insurance claim projects.

Qualifications

Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years electrical construction or electrical maintenance.
  • Minimum of 2 years Solar electrical construction or Solar electrical maintenance.
  • CA Journeyman or Master electrical license.
  • NABCEP certification preferred.
  • Basic understanding of TCP and Modbus protocols.
  • Basic understanding of how to interface with and understand various communication devices that operate under the TCP and Modbus protocols.
  • Ability to use many resources (Borrego, Manufacturer, Subcontractor) to understand and solve problems in the quickest and most efficient way possible.
  • Advanced electrical troubleshooting skills including AC/DC ground faults, asset communication issues, switch gear trips, and generic PV equipment failures.
  • Willingness to work with O&M team and accept direction when resolving service issues and maintenance requirements.
  • Advanced customer experience skills - Ability to make the customer comfortable and included in the process of maintaining and servicing their solar power plant.
  • Computer skills - O&M solar technician will need basic computer skills to operate quickly and efficiently with manufacturer's utility programs, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, DWG viewer, and various DAS platforms.

Required Skills:

  • Teamwork - ability to work with a team of O&M professionals to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to read, understand electrical, civil, and structural plans.
  • Problem solving and implementing site-specific procedures to increase plant uptime.
  • Analytical - Must be able to analyze problem scenarios and make quick intelligent decisions.
  • Understanding of logistics and operations in a service environment.
  • Strong understanding of the NEC Code and the ability to reference the code as required.
  • Experience managing schedules to ensure maintenance is done on time and on budget.
  • Proficiency on a PC computer with basic hardware, software, and networking abilities.
  • Positive ‘can-do' attitude.
