Justice Department Focusing on Monsanto

Published on: March 22, 2010

Crop biotech company Monsanto (NYSE: MON) is finally coming under antitrust scrutiny from the US Justice Department according to a Wall Street Journal report.

In January, the Justice Department launched a formal investigation into the company’s Round-up resistant soy bean and now they will hold a series of public meetings across the Farm Belt to hear first-hand what farmers and activists have to say about the company’s practices.

The company has been criticized for its developent of genetically modified seeds and strong-arm licensing tactics. However, they won a minor victory in January, when the Supreme Court agreed to review a lower court decision blocking the sale of round-up resistant alfalfa seed until an environmental review is conducted.
