Research and Writing Associate for Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program

Full time, salary with benefits Location: San Francisco's Marina/Cow Hollow District

Organization: 

Flex Your Power is California's marketing and outreach campaign for energy efficiency. The hiring organization is a small private firm working on a major, multi-year statewide campaign. The environment is professional, self-directed and teamwork-oriented. 

Research and writing responsibilities may include: 

o Short articles and headlines for our electronic newsletters
o Case studies and best practices guides featuring our partners (businesses, organizations and government entities)
o Website content 

The research & writing associate must have strong research, writing, editing and public outreach skills. The work requires the ability to gather pieces of information from a variety of sources (and in a variety of contexts), synthesize it and draw out the most relevant points, then organize it into a clear and compelling story. The writing must be persuasive, accurate and lively -- and must be produced on schedule. Research is done through internal staff discussions, the Internet, print publications, research reports, and phone conversations with our partners and other experts. 

Applicants must be comfortable talking by phone with senior-level professionals in the business, government and nonprofit sectors and must be able to follow up in a persistent but professional manner to keep projects on track as well as juggle multiple tasks and deadlines. Applicants must be thorough, accurate and attentive to detail, yet also able to keep projects aligned with the larger context of the Flex Your Power campaign. The associate must be able to work carefully with data to develop energy savings calculations and other analysis. 

The associate will work in a team-oriented environment and must be able to give and receive feedback professionally. The job entails a significant amount of computer work, including database entry, maintaining clear records and creating/editing documents. 

Requirements: 

o 2-3 years of relevant experience -- writing, editing, research.
o Some experience or knowledge of energy efficiency/conservation and/or green building issues strongly preferred.
o Journalism experience a plus.
o Excellent professional writing, revision and editing skills.
o Strong research skills and ability to find and extract information from a variety of sources including the Internet and phone conversations.
o Excellent proofreading skills and attention to detail.
o Strong verbal skills. Able to engage and direct senior-level professionals in dialogue by telephone.
o Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Filemaker, Word, Excel and desktop publishing applications (e.g., InDesign, Pagemaker or Quark).
o Ability to manage multiple projects and meet goals and deadlines.
o Ability to work well in a team environment as well as independently.
o Professional attitude.
