JOB DESCRIPTION:
Assist with wildlife reintroduction and management projects (i.e., Blanding's Turtle radio tracking, fish translocation, population monitoring). Also includes purple loosestrife biological control, assistance with biological surveys, and some participation in field restoration activities such as brush cutting and seed collecting.
QUALIFICATIONS
Student or beginning professional in ecology, biology, natural resource.
WORKING CONDITIONS: management or a conservation related field, willingness to acquire Illinois herbicide operator's license, valid driver's license. Internship involves outdoor work in all weather conditions, moderate light lifting (30 lbs) and occasional heavy lifting (90 lbs). It also involves frequent walking for long periods of time through various terrains. Requires a sighted individual (vision corrected to 20/20) to conduct surveys and restoration activities, and with normal hearing (corrected to within a normal audible range) for frog and bird call surveys. Possible hazards may include herbicides/pesticides operation, use of power equipment (i.e. chainsaw) and contact with nature (i.e. bees, insects/spiders, poison ivy, etc). International interns (whether currently in U.S. or abroad) accepted through Council Exchanges only.
SCHEDULE: May 1st through August 25th; 40-50 hour work week Monday through Friday, usually 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but occasional 6 day work week and/or evening work may be required.
STIPEND & BENEFITS: $35 per day to max. $175 per week, college credit as approved by applicant's institution and advisor, complimentary housing available on a first-come basis, worker's compensation, training and safety equipment provided.
