Description
Work for Houston Wilderness.
Are you interested in working for a non-profit organization that promotes Houston's natural places of wild beauty? Are you interested in being part of the effort to increase outdoor educational experiences for schoolchildren in the Houston area?
Houston Wilderness is a broad-based alliance of business, environmental and government interests that act in concert to protect, preserve and promote the unique biodiversity of the region's precious remaining ecological capital - from bottomland hardwoods and prairie grasslands to pine forests and wetlands - while recognizing the importance of the region's natural assets to its cultural history, economic vitality and future well-being. Houston Wilderness functions as an umbrella organization serving this network.
The Houston Wilderness Nature Passport
An ultimate goal of Houston Wilderness is to help ensure that by the time a child reaches the seventh grade, he or she will have had at least one outdoor nature experience. With innovative educational tools, Houston Wilderness is providing local children and families with the opportunity to better understand the interdependence of our local natural systems. The Houston Wilderness Nature Passport is one such educational tool that will help facilitate this goal.
The structure is similar to a government passport; a child visits designated sites to receive a stamp in his or her passport.
The sites are located throughout the 24 county region and include state parks, wildlife refuges, museums, arboretums, and nature centers.
The Passport is geared towards 4th grade readers, but is available for all ages to use.
The Passport can be used as a tool to help teachers meet many TEKS requirements in science, history, and geography.
Going forward, we envision the Passport program as a tool to reach out to adults as well, and plan to develop a corporate version of the Passport program to aid in our outreach.

S/he will be responsible for promoting the passport to potential participants, such as superintendents, curriculum and science coordinators and teachers. The applicant may coordinate and plan for events and meetings at which the passport will be presented to teachers, students and families. S/he will also help to develop an incentive program to keep participants visiting the sites. The Nature Passport is a rewarding project, by the completion of the internship, the intern will know that s/he helped children in the Houston-area to know and appreciate the eco-region surrounding them and worked to protect those resources for future generations.
The intern will also assume the responsibility of the events calendar on the Houston Wilderness website. S/he will keep the calendar updated with special events and activities that are coming up in our parks, preserves and nature centers.
