Co-lead a crew of ten high school and college age crew members performing high priority backcountry conservation projects in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Potential work projects include backcountry shelter construction, trail maintenance and bridge construction. Possible work locations for the 2002 season are: Niquette Bay State Park (Colchester, VT), West River Trail (Jamaica, VT), and Groton State Forest (Groton, VT). Train, motivate, and supervise crew members in a wilderness setting for four-week sessions. Oversee personal development of each crew member, foster high morale and build a cohesive crew. Set-up remote base camp near work project. Teach minimum impact camping and wilderness ethics. Lead daily reading, writing, and discussion program as well as informal educational activities. Purchase bulk food and plan meals. Communicate with work project sponsors on work goals, progress, and timelines. Couples encouraged to apply.
Dates: May 19 to August 26, 2002. Includes paid, two-week residential staff training.
Salary: $360 - $480/wk. plus room and board. Qualifying staff may receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of between $1,000 and $2,500 (for tuition or student loan repayment).
Qualifications:
Outdoor leadership experience. Supervisory experience and strong desire to live and work with diverse groups of young people. Knowledge of group initiatives and experiential education. Maturity and ability to motivate young people under strenuous conditions. Trail work or related experience with hand tools. Backcountry savvy and knowledge of minimum impact camping. Bulk food purchasing experience. First Aid & CPR certification required. Minimum age of 22.
