Position Overview

We are seeking Wetland Scientists / Field Ecologists to join our Permitting, Planning and Licensing team. The successful candidate will report to our Scarborough, ME, Augusta ME, or Manchester NH office and will be involved in a wide variety of energy-related projects (including electric transmission, natural gas pipeline, renewable energy (wind/solar), as well as transportation and other development projects. 

Preference will be given to applicants with the ability to conduct wetland delineations and functional assessments, wildlife surveys, rare plant surveys, as well as other diverse biological field work. The applicant should also have an ability to identify plant species commonly found in the northeastern U.S. (especially in New England), and should be able to collect accurate data in the field and produce professional reports in the office. The successful candidates will also be able to understand site plans, and GPS and GIS technologies. 

Preference will also be given to applicants that have experience working on energy and transportation projects involving MA Wetlands Protection Act, Clean Water Act Section 404, 10 and 408, Section 401 WQC, MEPA, Chapter 91, CZMA consistency determinations, NEPA, FERC and other local, state and federal permitting programs. Successful applicants will be able to interact in the field with clients, contractors, and environmental agency representatives. 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct wetland delineations and functional assessments, wildlife surveys, rare plant surveys, as well as other diverse biological field work.
  • Responsible for identifying plant species commonly found in the northeastern U.S. (especially in New England), and should be able to collect accurate data in the field and produce professional reports in the office.
  • Perform well with supervision and have familiarity with reviewing site plans, and GPS and GIS technologies.
  • Will support energy and transportation projects involving wide array of state and federal permitting programs.
  • Field interaction with clients, contractors, and environmental agency representatives.

Qualifications

Required Skills: 

  • Excellent data collection, technical writing and communication skills are mandatory, along with the ability to maintain a positive attitude during year-round field work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of plant species, soil types, and hydrology is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of erosion and sediment control, best management practices commonly implemented during construction, and familiarity with construction of energy and/or transportation-related projects is preferred. 

Required Experience: 

  • Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resources, or related field, and 1 to 3 years of post-degree experience wetlands permitting, delineation, permit compliance monitoring and inspections for construction projects.
  • Experience performing field work in New England preferred.
