Description

Background:

The Worldwatch Institute, a global research and publishing organization that focuses on environmental, social and development issues, is looking for a Web Site Manager who will be responsible for the overall management and implementation of all activities associated with the Worldwatch Institute's Internet and intranet sites.

Currently www.worldwatch.org is an active, high-volume site that acts as an interface for more than 1,000 products. On an annual basis, two major books, four annual research papers, six annual magazine issues, one annual CD, and frequent issue briefs and other specialized web products will be added to the site.

The main initial focus for the Web Site Manager will be adding new content and features to the Worldwatch website while simultaneously maintaining and enhancing its functionality and usability. The longer-term focus will be to assist with the development and implementation of an Internet strategic plan and business case for the Institute, including plans for creating a new, more dynamic web platform and architecture.

The Web Site Manager is responsible for web-related teamwork across all departments and reports to the Vice President for Business Development. This full-time staff position is also a key member of the Institute's Web Team, which facilitates interdepartmental coordination and strategy.

Specific Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Oversee all daily operations of the website-upgrades, software, hardware, e-mail and security systems. Investigates system errors, performs backups and ensures site performance.
  • Plan, implement, test and maintain content and graphics for the Institute's Internet and intranet sites.
  • Design and construct web pages, including incorporation of graphic user interface (GUI) features, streaming audio and video, etc.
  • Track and analyze Web traffic on monthly basis and recommend and implement strategies to increase it.
  • Develop and manage processes and templates for adding content to website and meeting needs of all departments, including coordinating with department heads as well as editors and art director responsible for the Institute's print publications.
  • Manage web development initiatives including those that are or may be executed with the assistance of outside partners/vendors.
  • Assist with the development of an Internet Action Plan/Business Case for how the Institute will use the Internet to better support the organization's mission.
  • Plan, develop, and implement database-driven web application.
  • Ensure that branding of the Institute and each of the publications is consistent across all pages of our site.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree and 3-5 years' experience in Web development/design.
  • Broad web development skills, including working knowledge of some combination of HTML, Perl, PHP, ColdFusion, ASP, MySQL, Oracle, as well as practical experience integrating front-end Web applications with back-end database systems.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including ability to manage simultaneous projects and meet rigorous deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to be a motivated team player who works with a talented, diverse staff.

Additional Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with e-commerce, especially as it relates to the sale of publications and online fundraising.
  • Ability to use Adobe Photoshop (or similar) to create and enhance graphics for use on the Web site.
  • Editing and publishing experience.
  • Environmental interest and experience.
