With world attention focused on both the environment and the economy, Environmental Defense is where policymakers and business leaders turn for win-win solutions. This leading green group, founded in 1967 as the Environmental Defense Fund, has tripled in size over the past decade by focusing on strong science, uncommon partnerships and market-based approaches.
You can be part of a vibrant workplace that welcomes diverse perspectives, talents and contributions, where innovation and a focus on results are a way of life. With programs from Boston to Beijing, Environmental Defense Fund is the only environmental group to receive an A rating from Wired magazine.
Position Overview:
Environmental Defense Fund is increasingly using online communications to get the word out and exert influence. We're looking for a Web producer to help keep our online presence as top-notch as our science and policy work. Together with other senior members of our Internet team, the producer will re-think and build the next generation of our online presence. Projects can range in scope from routine landing pages to a full site makeover. Please note: This position can be located in our DC or NY office.
Responsibilities:
- Work with program and communications staff to clarify and articulate their goals
- Based on the goals, work with other online specialists to develop content strategy, design guidelines, information architecture and outreach plans.
- Build site sections using our content management system, HTML, CSS, and WordPress.
- Schedule, track and manage projects with multi-disciplinary teams of staff and consultants. Small projects might include just a writer and science expert. Large ones can add to that an outside designer, UI researcher, programmer, public relations expert and additional writers and experts.
- Take full responsibility for the overall cohesion and quality of projects, including quality assurance.
- Supply the energy, communication and leadership to keep projects moving in a decentralized environment.
- Pitch in with ideas and other help as needed on a small, close Internet team.
Qualifications:
- 5 or more years of experience coordinating and executing projects of similar scope and complexity.
- Thorough knowledge of online production environments and challenges.
- Proficiency with standards-compliant HTML and CSS and light-duty design using Photoshop
- Strong user-centered design background, including familiarity with common research techniques.
- Experience keeping project teams focused, organized and moving. Knowledge of Basecamp is a plus, but compulsive use of any similar tool is a good sign.
- Excellent written and in-person communication skills. Editorial background is a plus.
- Good judgment about when to engage different team members or outside experts.
- Fascination with emerging applications and communications tools, and curiosity about how we can use them to advance Environmental Defense's mission.
- Familiarity with dynamic content, RSS feeds, WordPress, video and audio editing.
- Flexibility to take on new roles as the evolution of the Internet leads us in unanticipated directions.
- Commitment to environmental progress is not required, but it will make the work more interesting.
To Apply:
Interested applicants should forward their cover letter, resume and salary requirements via email. We are only able to respond to qualified candidates; no phone calls please.
